How important is it to have history or geography as a GCSE?

DS2 wants todo Classics and his only humanity and then to fill his other choices with Computer Science and DT. (He will also do Maths, Further Maths 3Science 2English and 1MFL)

My kid's school insists on either History or Geography at GCSE level, our other local secondary school doesn't but insists on a language. I don't think it's an essential if he has a particular career path he wants to follow that won't involve either subject.

Classics and history have lots of cross over. I think it's fine.

Tbf I did both history and geography at GCSE and then did a classics degree so ...

I didn't do history for GCSE, but I did do it at A-level and then degree. Classics has some historical study within it, I would think it's a good substitute to develop the skills that are developed studying history (e.g. evaluation and analysis of sources, fluent writing).

It's fine OP. His school might object and insist he does one so they can tick the eBacc box, but it will not affect him. A humanity in general is a good thing (IMO) to support essay-writing and analysis skills, but classics (assume classical civ rather than Latin or Greek?) will surely tick that box.

Classics as in? Is it Latin, Greek, history or civilisation?

Onnabugeisha · 21/02/2023 14:49

Classics is history…it’s just ancient history instead of modern history. I think he will be fine.

Classics as in civilisations.

Thanks for your feedback! His school will let him choose those options. Classics was not something my school offered and DH is very reticent about it being his only humanity.
