My daughter got an offer with bursary at G&L, which we are almost ready to accept. The issue I have is this: what are the additional costs of the school? Like lunch, additional paid activities etc? Any leads? Thanks

Uniform, which tend to be expensive for everything. Hopefully they've got a second hand shop or you're looking at about £1000. Some extra curricular activities and trips (sports, theatre, holidays) need paying for and some materials for activities and treats. Meals should be paid for, but breakfast and dinner might be at an additional cost. We're paying extra for dancing, piano and house riding

They sent in the offer an email which lists some of the extra costs. For example lunch is 5.50 a day. Not sure if you can opt out and bring your own lunch? The list also lists other costs. I am waiting for the uniform info. It all adds up doesn't it!?! But costs might be difference if you have a bursary? I would email the school to find out.

I think that you can often take a packed lunch but it's definitely worth checking. There are often second hand/nearly new sales for uniform. Trips will be extra but they'll be optional. The bursary may include trips at the same level as the bursary?

I am not sure where @FenghuangHoyan got her information, perhaps they are thinking of a different school.

Uniform is actually very reasonable. Main uniform is just a shirt and jumper (no blazer or tie). Grey trousers or skirt can be bought from anywhere. Sports uniform is more costly but there are second hand uniform sales. You can check prices on the suppliers websites.

Lunches - I believe compulsory the first year, but can bring packed lunch from y8. Last fee bill had £286 for lunch for spring term.

Trips - I don't think there has ever been any charge for day trips. Overnight is paid, but optional and emails always note that if you want to partake but have financial difficulties you should speak to the bursar (DD has had an overnight to Lille and a sports tour to Northern Ireland). G&L had actually just sent us a list of school trips coming up so they should be able to provide that.

Clubs - many are free, with some paid (fencing and rowing - there are some others). As in other schools, music lessons and speech and drama is extra.

Suggest you speak with the bursar/admissions who will be able to provide with all details you want.

Hot tip re G&L uniform...my non sporty Y8 daughter has worn the grey uniform & school shoes less than ten times since she started.
She wears the sports kit every single day even on non sports days as it's comfier & there's always someone in the class doing a sports club on any given day so it's not like anyone calls you out on it.
I ended up returning the unopened school shirts & over time bought much more sports kit from the 2HUS.
We've never used the sports bag - the 2HUS is always full of brand new untouched sports bags!!

SamPoodle123 · 13/02/2023 11:22

@beautifulyoungmind thanks, that is good to know.

SamPoodle123 · 13/02/2023 11:29

Also, I saw they have G&L Jacket. Do they wear school jackets or they can wear their own?

beautifulyoungmind · 13/02/2023 11:42

Hardly anyone wears the jacket. We only have one because I scored one at the 2HUS & it's quite a good waterproof.

beautifulyoungmind · 13/02/2023 11:43

They all wear their own jackets.
Happy to answer any other questions.
