Homework Causing Arguments/Tips To Motivate Not Bothered 15 Year Old

Just that really.

Year 10 son is a lovely lad, behaved well in class etc but just cannot be bothered to do more than the least that he absolutely has to.

Parents evening pretty much everyone said he could do so well If he just tried a bit harder.

Homework is causing massive conflict. He gets defensive if we try to discuss it. He doesn't get much in the first place (alot less than I did in year 10!) So when he has none we have encouraged him to work on the 2 subjects hes really struggling with. Often the homework he does Is low quality and alot less than hes capable of.

Honestly it's a nightmare- arguments all the time.

I want to encourage effort and reward that- if he tried his best I wouldn't mind the grade, it's just watching him not give a crap and waste opportunity.

Any tips to Motivate him and reduce the conflict? Thank you

What does he want to do in life? For work?

Thanks @Littlemountainhum not that much at the moment tbh. He sees influencers on tik tok and I suspect he thinks that's a realistic ambition.

Anything he thinks of is minimum wage- barber, delivery driver. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these jobs, but my mum worked hard as a cleaner to send me to university and I know how hard it is to make ends meet like this. If I tell him this he rolls his eyes.

His grade expectations are 8 ish....hes working at 5ish. Teachers love him, hes genuinely lovely- I think they think he will pull it out of the bag at the last minute. K can see him struggling (mostly due to lack of work) and know he won't

Outside mentor

meet him once a fortnight for a coffee sole aim
of motivating him researching careers, qualifications needed

buy all the cgp guides - 1 hour extra on the book - equals one hour on computer / phone time

CrescentMoons · 31/01/2023 21:08

All work in cgp book timed and on the kitchen table, tutor if needed

Thank you.

What are reasonable amounts of time to expect him to spend on homework per night?
