KGS 10+

Did anyone else have children sitting the KGS 10+ yesterday? How did they find it? Does anyone know how many they call to interview? There seemed to be loads of children there but don’t know numbers. Good luck to everyone!

There are lots of old threads on this but in general many people use it as practice and don't expect to get to the interview stage. I think in an old thread there are some stats but whilst you hear of dc who get through the interview and get an offer you don't often hear of dc who actually attend when they are 11. If they are bright enough to get an offer from 10 plus KGS they are bright enough to get into a grammar school or scholarship to a "top" school. They should also get a scholarship from KGS when they sit the exam a year later.

Actually my dd got in to KGS on the 10+ and went there and there were several in her year. It certainly took the pressure off and we didn't like any of the other schools we looked at more than KGS (or even as much!). We did enter her for Latymer at 11+ just so she had something to work towards but we were never going to send her there. Good luck @travelturtle hope you get some good news!

Hi - Did you get positive news yesterday? My son has been invited back and looking for some tips on how to prepare for interview.

Dazzle85 · 19/01/2023 10:52

@sailingsunshine please can you direct to the post you refer as I tried searching but unable to see any stats on how many kids are made offers post interview

kagurazakamum · 19/01/2023 11:10

@OldieButBaddie just curious what was KGS' reaction to your daughter applying for LU at 11+? That's almost immediate application upon joining and can't imagine school would be supportive about it. Asking as I plan to do something similar.

poppybuttons · 19/01/2023 11:40

@kagurazakamum , with KGS 10 plus you don't join until you are 11 in Year 7, you remain at your primary school for the final year.

kagurazakamum · 19/01/2023 11:46

@poppybuttons thanks that makes sense. Just wondered about the through schools that accept children at different stages (such as 7+, 8+) felt about them going for others at 11+ for various reasons.

poppybuttons · 19/01/2023 12:21

It's common for parents to tutor and prepare dc for other schools, for example dd at LEH juniors and Surbiton prep taking Tiffin exams. You don't need to tell the prep part of the school until you have registered and need a reference for the secondary and if you are going for state grammar you don't need to tell them at all until you give notice to leave. It's just quite a lot of work for you and of course the dc talk in the playground and to their teachers.

I don't think they would have known would they?
They don't start till the following year, I only did it to keep her interest up (though she was fully aware that we all preferred KGS so not sure it did really!)
We hadn't tutored for 10+ so didn't bother for 11+ either as we didn't want her to go there anyway!

kagurazakamum · 19/01/2023 13:44

@OldieButBaddie @poppybuttons I guess, especially if it was for grammar but I was worried about the reference and the headteacher's letter etc as we'll prob try another indie. I shall see how that goes with my own DC! :D

The headteacher's reference came from her Primary school as she was still there.
You do understand the 10+ doesn't mean you go to the school for y10, you start in y11 with everyone else!

kagurazakamum · 19/01/2023 13:56

Yes yes that I realize now, I was referring to those who joined at 7+ or 8+. Sorry about the confusion!

I presume this is at a different school? KGS doesn't have 7+ or 8+

kagurazakamum · 19/01/2023 13:59

Yes I’ve generalized it too much here, initially thinking 10+ join KGS at y6!

Dazzle85 · 21/01/2023 07:59

@trtravelturtle have you received the results...hope it was positive

AMR19 · 22/01/2023 08:20

Can anyone please help
on 10plus interview tips for KGS?

Dazzle85 · 25/01/2023 12:53

@OldieButBaddie ..any idea on how many kids who get interviewed at 10 plus get offers? We just finished the interview and have a anxious wait ..so trying to get a idea of our chances of getting a offer

IIRC there were about 20 places, but it could have changed since DD did it.
Good luck!

swmu · 11/02/2023 10:32

We just got the 10+ offer yesterday. I'm thinking about whether we should pay the deposit ~2k as DD won't go to an independent school if she gets into a good state school. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Another poster has started a thread in Education.

woohooho · 11/02/2023 11:20

But if you don't pay the deposit and she doesn't get into a state school you're happy with she won't have a place surely?
I think I'd pay the deposit- it's a drop in the ocean compared to the fees you'll save if she doesn't go there.
