OK - so we have the 7 life processes - I get that. And I get that a car isn't alive, despite the fact that it moves and excretes. But precisely how do you explain to a visitor from another planet that even though a car needs fuel to move, it's not the same as eating. Or is it the same - and you only know a car isn't a living thing because it only does three out of the 7?

The car isn't alive because it doesn't do all 7

the chemical reaction is very similar. But we do it less explosivly!

Viruses are not alive because they can't reproduce without infecting another cell, they can't 'do it' on their own, so they are not classed as alive

MRS GREN
is the way to remember them

And crystals grow.

and chemicals can be sensitive to the environment.

the key thing is that living things do all of them at some point in their life cycle (at this point some smart arse says, 'but what about monks and nuns, they don't reproduce', at which point you beat them soundly while chanting, 'in the general run of things they could if they wanted to' )

My DH doesn't 'do it less explosively' !!!
