Fulham Boys School

Tonight I had lots of talk with my younger DS and realised he would really need to change school.

He is a bright Y11. He has already got a couple of 9s in GCSEs and I believe he will do well for the rest of GCSEs next year (predicted all 9). He could have tried academically selective independent schools but sadly I think we missed a boat.

So I checked state schools and found Fulham Boys. The journey is easy and they offer a-level subjects DS is thinking to do. However old threads of this school don't sound positive but they were a couple of years ago. I was wondering if I could hear more recent experience of the school. Is it a good school for academic boys like DS? He is also very sporty. The deadline for the application is January so we have very little time to decide....

Any sharing of your views would be very much appreciated.

The old threads are only a couple of years old. The headmaster has not changed because he arrived a couple of years ago so presumably the next decade will stay as is. Sporting - no. One sports phase a week at Hurlingam fields offsite, about 20 minute walk. Some parents drive to collect, sometimes kids walk back via bus routes. Sometimes sport for cricket, is at Barne Elms sports centre, because Hurlingham does not have cricket nets, where more parents drive to collect, but majority boys get 1 or 2 buses back. Academics are alright - we were top of most classes. But that tells you something because my kid is average. Just Maths and English are in Sets which means a low medium or high set and there is movement up or down in those sets depending on results.

Forget about the previous threads and post about FBS (which was full of spite and hyperbole) and pay a visit to this wonderful school!

Exceptional school with a strong Christian ethos. Boys seem like a close knit bunch and staff happy. If you can get a place I’d say it’s a no brainer.

People are entitled to their views Osmium. Parents calling other people spiteful and hyperbolic is a good reason not to join this school.

No one is forcing you to sign up to this school Workingschoolmum. If you want to make a choice (schooling) based on hearsay, rather than actually seeing it for yourself, then that is on you.

IMO boys from FBS don't differ dramatically from children from local comps, say Hurlingham. I'm not ready to send my child to Hurlingham thus no FBS for him either. Some parents on FB were not impressed and were selling uniform, moving their boys somewhere else, so maybe find sw6 fb group and ask there.

I don't have a son there but know a fair few who do. Generally pretty happy. Lots have sisters at Lady Margaret's.
