Hi there.
I am asking anyone who may have the knowledge of this to help calm our mind. Our boy has achieved 375 pass mark for Altrincham grammar for boys. We live out of catchment are about 10 to 15 miles away from the school. Do we stand the chance?

I think historically, there have always been 6 classes - I think 15/16 and 16/17 a bulge class was added which probably affected the score. You're right that the expansion of the school so PAN is actually 7 classes now as the norm and a move to the Consortium Exam will also mean a lower school, so as I said, 375 will probably be safe.

On the other point, there's actually quite alot going on in terms of extra-curricular activities (much wider than sport now) but I meant the general day to day living. Yes there are boys coming OOC but the catchment is actually quite small so OOC isn't necessrily that far away. I just mean for the OP to consider it carefully - school life is about more than just the school itself.

The catchment area was increased to include more postcodes a few years ago so the catchment is as wide as Sale Grammar's catchment I believe so OOC candidates come from further away. It used to have a small catchment. You can check the catchment postcodes on the website. Also changes in test type and which schools are in the consortium in any given year and hence the cohort of applicants will affect the score. There are lots of extra curriculars on offer. I think applicants need to consider potential schools and balance their pros and cons while bearing in mind travel time.
