Dd needs a quotation on a vaguely religious theme - anyone got any good ones? I favour Ghandi "First they ignore you, then they laugh at yeo, then they fight you, then you win" but she's not keen.

Whta about the one about the Nazis - about speaking out/sticking up for others?

Something like

First they came for the homosexuals and I kept silent
Then they came for the Jews
then they came for me but there was no one left to speak up for me

hang on I'll gooogle

First They Came for the Jews
First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

Pastor Martin Niemöller

I respect faith, but doubt is what gets you an education.

How about....

I don't know who or what God is. All I know is he's more powerful than Mom ...

courtesy of Lisa Simpson

or does that not quite strike the right tone?

Lucycat · 27/01/2008 10:24

actually the full quote is

I'm no theologian. I don't know who or what God is. All I know is he's more powerful than Mom and Dad put together.?

that better?

KatyMac · 27/01/2008 10:27

I may not like your religion, but I will defend your right to practise it with my life

I don't know who said that/something similar but I like it

oxocube · 27/01/2008 10:37

just googled a few and like

"We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another"

Jonathon Swift

and

"If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him"

Voltaire

Love the Lisa Simpson quote

Thank you - she has ignored us all and gone for "If you think you can, or think you can't - you're right" which her gym coach used to get her over the vaulting horse when she was in year 4.

Henry Ford, by the way.

Good - I like someone with independence - also - she remembered it so it must have made an impression

branflake81 · 28/01/2008 10:08

KatyMac - it's Voltaire "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

KatyMac · 28/01/2008 13:07

That's the one

Ubergeekian · 28/01/2008 13:52

Bart: What religion are we?
Homer: You know, the one with all the well-meaning rules that don't work in real life -- uh, Christianity.
