Anyone else have a DC sitting 11+ this Autumn?

If so, would you like to chat on a support thread?

DD is sitting her exam tomorrow.

Anyone else? Waiting for the results will be nail-biting.

@ElvenDreamer well done to your DS for doing so well and keeping everything crossed for you that it works out for you.

@Dynamix we're way out of catchment too, so far that we've been looking at boarding options (have donned flack jacket remembering this is MN). I think N Yorks website has tables of how much the waiting list moves between March and September? 2nd option is currently way up in the air as there are big family disagreements over it 😣

2nd class postage for results here - typically Yorkshire 😂

I feel your pain! Results stress and no guarantees even with a pass. I've just checked North Yorks (looking for the waiting list movement info) and it looks like they have put on their 2022/23 admissions data and the last admitted child lived over 20 miles out. That's a massive leap from 9.9 miles out the year before, which was also unprecedented. That has definitely been added since the last time I looked (only 2021/22 data available then) and potentially positive if we get good news on the entrance exam.

I could see that there were 13 children on the waiting list on allocation day on 1st March 2022 but no info on if this ever moved.

Apologies to non Yorkshire folk and yes.... bloody misers with second class post!

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 13/10/2022 13:46

Birmingham folk-the Grammar school association has tweeted that results will be emailed Monday…so only a few more days to go.

Aethelfleda · 13/10/2022 13:57

Well done @ElvenDreamer for your DS! I know it’s frustrating having such a long wait but at least you can put that grammar on the CAF with a backup underneath it….

Am half wanting tomorrow evening to come asap, and half dreading it, even though our backup is a good one, I know DS will have a bit of a dent in his confidence (and be sad for the music loss) if he doesn’t make a pass mark. stupid system.

Selection Reviews are a specific process seen in Bucks as an all-selective county. I don’t know if other places do them: they are there so local kids who really, really were expected to pass can be “converted” to a pass on Review and put into the first place allocatoon round (as opposed to Appeals which occur AFTER first of march where all the places have gone already) .

The way Bucks do it, the heads are asked to grade every student BEFORE they touch the papers (in 1st week September ) into 1 “amazing should be at grammar” 2 “well they work hard and are quite bright”, 3 “they try but not sure” and 4 “nah, this child is def not up to it”. The grades remain secret and sealed from everyone apart from Head and the Admissions panel.

then if the child gets 120 or 118 (pass 121) the parent can request a selection review, the head writes a recommendation letter, the secret pre-grade is looked at (heads are not allowed to rank everyone 1 or it gets discounted!!) and the Admissions panel make a decision. if it’s a yes, child’s CAF form is treated as if they passed outright. If it’s a no, then appeal is possible but unlikely to work.

See here for a longer explaination on the elevenplus forum.

bucks review

Thank you, this is really helpful.

What about a 1:1 or 2:2 child who just does really badly for no discernable reason - I'm talking maybe 115 or lower? Eg just a bad day, I mean, they're mostly 10 after all. Hopefully a theoretical question but forewarned is forearmed!

Aethelfleda · 13/10/2022 15:21

if you follow the link to the elevenplus forum, @Octoberfishing there are lots of examples
of reviews and appeals on there (for all regions of appeal , not just Bucks)
For Bucks it seems that the closer the child scores to the magical 121 , the more likely a review is to be successful. Children have been successful with low scores before but the lilelyhood is much lower, one of the sadly departed and much missed ex-mods Sallyanne I think published a table of what proportion of certain scores were successful but that was years ago and no idea where that post is. suffice it to say that a 119-120 score is highly worth a Review, a 110 and below much less so.

Aethelfleda · 13/10/2022 16:47

Found the link!

Look at this thread here

linky

and then there is another link on the second post that goes down to the success %

table of chances for different scores

ElvenDreamer · 13/10/2022 10:30

Results are out here, DS has a mark that will have got in some years and not in others, so the agonising wait will now be extended to March and possibly beyond 😥

Do you know how they calculate the final score?

Based on last year's algorithm my DS would have scored a lot higher than he did (and would have a mark higher than the lowest mark admitted.)

His actual mark is a lot lower and is quite a way below the mark he would have got last year so I'd just line to understand why.

BordoisAgain · 13/10/2022 18:09

Also, I'd like to work out if there's definitely no chance of him getting a place and let him down gently!

ElvenDreamer · 13/10/2022 18:14

@BordoisAgain are you Essex too? Tbh the algorithms confuse me every time I've tried to read them, but I know the ahe adjustment is different each year and also they look at the difficulty of the paper. Have you visited the 11+ forum at all? There is a mark sharing thread, bot many people have posted yet but I suspect many haven't realised they're out early. Interesting seeing raw scores, birth months and what they've converted to.

starpatch · 13/10/2022 18:15

If its an SAS score its a standardised score which I assume would be calculated based on statistical things like standard deviations and what not (sorry rubbish explanation but as far as I have got in understanding this stuff!)

BordoisAgain · 13/10/2022 18:25

Yes, we're Essex

jessieminto · 13/10/2022 18:30

No hint that Trafford results will be out tomorrow. Perhaps it's next week instead. Argh!!!

ElvenDreamer · 13/10/2022 19:02

@BordoisAgain last year (my DD went through it last year) the standardisation report wasn't released until some weeks after results as I recall. To see chances, I don't know which school(s) you're considering but I've been google searching FOI requests for the one I'm interested in and every year there's one for lowest mark getting in on offers day and lowest mark eventually. I've gone back through 5 years to calculate DS's chances 🤣

MagnaQuestion · 13/10/2022 20:07

I've looked at Essex on the eleven plus forum (we're not Essex just looking!)

Are the 47/45 etc raw scores. Is that out of 50!??! Or a percentage? Just curious!

ElvenDreamer · 13/10/2022 20:11

@MagnaQuestion 47 etc are the raw scores, out of 60. They then standardise them with some complex magic method that places everyone on a bell curve, the upper end being close to 400, lowest round 200ish I believe. Unless you are applying to CCHS which has its own system, so nearly all the girls take 2 11+ exams as they want the choice of CCHS or the consortium schools. All the boys schools are in the consortium so the boys only do one exam. (2 papers obvs.)

MagnaQuestion · 13/10/2022 21:04

Ah thanks.

Dorset don't release raw scores but just give out the standardised scores so we are clueless how it relates to the test!

ElvenDreamer · 13/10/2022 21:19

@BordoisAgain I tell a lie, standardisation formula for this year is on csse site, as is last years, so you'll be able to make a direct comparison.

BordoisAgain · 13/10/2022 22:30

Thanks Elven, very useful.

Unlikely DS will get into KEGS but luckily he is just as happy to go to the local secondary too so not a big deal!

jessieminto · 14/10/2022 07:21

Nothing released today for Trafford so next week it is. 7 more days to go.

Pipsquiggle · 14/10/2022 07:32

Results day for us today. Didn't sleep well. We will see what the day brings. Whatever happens, I don't think my DS could have done any more

redferrari · 14/10/2022 09:51

@Pipsquiggle same here, sleepless nights and waiting for results. I think I will have a few of those until offer day.

MagnaQuestion · 14/10/2022 09:51

Good luck those getting results today. Will you wait until your child is home or peek!?

Ours should be tomorrow (posted today but last time round some didn't arrive until Monday!) Wish it was online!

Aethelfleda · 14/10/2022 10:08

good wuestion @MagnaQuestion !!
We are due x2 today at 4 and at “sometime in the afternoon/evening”….
DS has football club til 4.30! argh…

We talked on the walk to school and his solution was “log on with your eyes closed and then print them out without looking” !!!!!!

So I am not sure. checking without him won’t alter the outcome, but I kind of want to see first so I can put on my poker face and be consoling.

But then again I might just wait til he’s home. it’s not like it’s going to alter the outcome.
Silly blooming system….

redferrari · 14/10/2022 10:09

It's supposed to be uploaded online from 4 pm onwards so will see it with my DS. Luckily he is not worried at all and we have a promising result in another test but have to wait until offer day.
