Trying to understand S1 "grading" scotland

So my oldest daughter has just started s1 in August. She's just had her first English paragraph graded. She got a grade 8. I have no idea if that's good or not? There's no explanation of the grade. Just that her grade is 8. Can anyone help? When I was in school a 7 was a fail so an 8 to me looks like a super fail 😂 I know its not, she's a clever girl but would be nice to have it explained.

Doesn't ring any bells with me. Try asking in the Scotsnet topic. There are people there with kids who're currently going through school, including a couple of English teachers Grin

I asked my Scottish husband (25) and he said he has no idea and it usually stopped at grade 4 when he was in S1, grade 1 being the highest

Unless maybe it's 8 out of 10?
