Timing house moves and secondary schooling

We moved into our current South London home about 6 years ago. Both kids doing OK in local state primary. We are about 1 mile out of a shrinking catchment of a decen comprehensive. We dont like the nearest school - headteacher sacked, kids bullying at bus stop, below national average results.

We are looking at all our options: selective private, superselective grammar, and moving to the better comp area. Signing both DC for private 7+ and 9+ entrance exams this month but there aren't many spaces. Frankly, chances are slim.

DH would like to sell our house if the older one doesnt get anything and rent in the comp area before DC1 starts Y5. DC1 may still sit for various 11+ (grammar and private). If he gets in, we buy near the school he gets into. If he doesn't, he at least gets the comp school and we buy a house in the comp area (it's very expensive)

I hate renting and moving and how much it all costs but i need to be realistic. What do people do? Are we mad or is this normal? I'm not from the UK and it seems mad.
