Here’s some info, sorry to hear you’ve been evicted. Must be very stressful for you all.

Is this going to be your permanent home? In which case your friend should sort out a tenancy agreement and get your name on bills including council tax (and. obvs your friend can't claim the single discount if they do currently).

If it's temporary you'll need to ask your council how they deal with homeless applicants. But with a child presumably they house you in a B and B?

As it's a very recent move, to a popular catchment, during school application time, it's likely the move will be scrutinised to make sure it's genuine.

What are you actually trying to do?

If your child is already at secondary, and you want to move their school as a result of the house move, you need to apply to your local education authority for an in-year application. You can apply for specific schools, but if they are full, the LEA will find you another space somewhere, assuming you have moved too far to get to the previous school. Given your address is presumably a temporary one, you would need to talk to the LA about what proof of address they might require.

If you are looking to apply this autumn for a Yr 7 place for next year, that needs to be done by end October, and again I think in your circumstances you should talk to the LA about proof of address. You won't be able to provide the normal proof, but they will have a process for people in your situation.

child is in yr 6 now and starting yr 7 nxt year. council can not house me because they said I made myself intentionally homeless and were using gatekeeping tactics etc. the advice I got from Shelter is rent privately which I am going to do but not now due to circumstances. I will be staying at my friends for a while and will be looking into renting in the are anyway as my other child goes to sch locally around the area.

You should be named as resident for council tax, surely?

LIZS · 08/09/2022 08:10

You need some proof of residence at that address - Gp registration, child benefit letter, council tax, electoral roll - to base the application on. If you move during the admissions process then update LA as they may need to use the new address instead.

You need to go on the electoral yoke where you live and change your address for everything you do pay/benefits eg child benefit to get a paper trail for your current address. You can then apply as normal for secondary school transfer in October. Meanwhile you can request an in year school move as well using your new address
