I am lost in a sea of school bags. Aargh. Any recommendations for a boy going into year7?

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for a great school bag for your DC, we’ve recently updated our best school bags page with lots of options, as bought, tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their kids. We hope you find it useful.

Mine both have Vans ones...not the cheapest but they are very sturdy and last the whole year but you can't go wrong with Nike or Adidas backpacks, Sports Direct have them.

Any idea what the other kids have / what are the rules. Ours have to be black with no large logos. DT1 has a vans one, DT2 an Eastpak

Does depend how much he will have to carry - few schools have textbooks now but some do; some have lockers, others not. Ds2 seemed to carry all his books with him but a Nike backpack would last him two years. Probs cost about £20 so not the cheapest but worth it. Can usually get them in all black (ie, black swoosh) if that’s required.

Black, Nike or Adidas round our way. DS had an Adidas 21L that lasted from Y7 to end of Y9. I've just bought him a Nike 25L to start Y10 as he's starting to need slightly more capacity.

Check how much he has to carry and whether it has to fit in lockers.

For Year 7, if you have an innocuous plain bag, one option is to send him with that for the first week while he susses out what the norm is at your school.

I agree with Vans - yes they are a bit pricey, but DD gets 2 years use from them.

My boy is starting year 7 and just has a black adidas bag.

Black Nike or Adidas. Usually buy the boys a new one each year and they do trash them.

I’ve got my son a vans one. I’ve seen a few when I was doing the school run as the high school kids walk past the primary school and I love vans as a brand so that’s what we went for.

DS is going into Y11 now - he got a Vans bag in Y6 then we replaced it at some point and it is battered but still going - I'd serously recommend the quality... DD was going through a bag a year but DS' last two or three

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 01/09/2022 18:12

Eastpak lasts years, and they're always "in"

reluctantbrit · 02/09/2022 10:26

The boys around here have either adidas or Nike bags, it may be worth checking in a local FB group what the current trend is.

In Y7-9 DD didn't have to bring a lot outside workbooks, pencil case, water and lunch. It gets more intense in Y10-11 when they have their own text books.

Mine had black no brand name you would recognise laptop rucksacks as they have padded breathable fabric on the rear of the rucksack so more comfortable to carry. Specifically Kroser, around £50 on Amazon.
