11+ moving house

We live in SE London and therefore looks like we will be joining the 11+ battle soon. DD currently goes to an independent school due to my job but would prefer grammar for secondary if possible as we have another DD to educate too and aren't mega rich!

Am I correct that

Bexley Grammar schools you must live in LB of Bexley

LB Bromley is only Newstead Woods which is super selective

Otherwise it is further into Kent for Dartford girls or a Tunbridge Wells area school?

She is bright enough to get an academic scholarship at an independent but that still leaves a lot to pay!

Sorry forgot to add that we will likely need to move house so trying to narrow down an area!

How utterly ridiculous is this country that there are whole areas that people feel they can't live in?

Pegase · 26/08/2022 10:07

It is really! For primary we couldn't afford anything in a good catchment area for a state primary so it actually worked out more affordable for us to buy a property we could get a mortgage on, in a less desirable area, and then pay school fees on top. All the best state options near us have become selective based on house prices to be honest.

Fortunately you do not have to live in the London Borough of Bexley to attend any of the schools- plenty of children apply from Greenwich, Bromley and Kent. If you score in the top 180 you are guaranteed entry to one of the grammar schools.

Bexley will publish the admission booklet which will indicate distances for 2022 admissions.

I'm currently moving out of Bexley to avoid the grammar school system! It's cruel and divisive and kids do worse overall in selective areas. Just look at the terrible state of Bexley's non selectives (only exception being St Catherine's which does really well). Whereabouts in SE London are you? Prendergast Hilly Fields and Sydenham High are two great girls' comprehensives.
