End of year report - missing!

Mumofboysbrum · 29/07/2022 13:50

My son has just finished Y7 and we were not given an end of year report. The last report was a basic progress report in March. I would like to ask secondary school teachers for their opinion, and other parents with children who just finished year 7 if they have received a report for their child. Estate school in the Midlands.

Is it your child who hasn't received a report? Or standard for your school not to issue a report for end of Y7?

DS's primary used to issue a full report around Easter, so feedback could actually happen, and set everything up for the following year. It worked well.

Child given report and forgot about it in their bag or deliberately got rid?

Does your school use any online platforms for attendance, behaviour, progress etc? The last couple of years our school have just put them on there and not sent an email out to inform parents as we’re expected to be looking on there regularly. We don’t get a paper copy.

Hope your DS hasn't done what I did once, and flushed in down the toilet!

My ds's school don't do written report, it's all online. Have you checked?

Curlyshabtree · 29/07/2022 14:37

My DS’ report was a sheet of A4 with each subject colour coded for attitude and homework and with percentages for attainment . It also listed attendance and behaviour points. No personal comments so as a result it was quite impersonal! But it was a decent over view of how he’s doing.

NoodleSnow · 29/07/2022 14:41

Our reports are all issued via the online portal.

Mumofboysbrum · 29/07/2022 15:07

No report at all on portal. I have asked the school and they say it is "unmanageable" to produce reports for all their pupils, so no, he hasn't flushed it!

No one in school did. I didn't know but this is their standard practice. They may work in the same way as your DS's primary school, although we were never given a full report or the opportunity to discuss it with a teacher. I will have to see how it goes in Y8. It may work well as most of the other parents don't seem to mind.

I think the rules on Reports vary according to the type of school? You could have a look at this guidance to Headteachers on School reports (although probably a bit late now):
www.gov.uk/guidance/school-reports-on-pupil-performance-guide-for-headteachers#information-that-must-be-reported-in-annual-reports

Also, there are The Education (Pupil Information) (England) Regulations 2005, which say that:
"Head teacher’s annual report to parents and adult pupils

6.—(1) This regulation applies to the head teacher of any school maintained by a local education authority.

(2) Subject to paragraphs (3) and (6), prior to the end of the summer term of every school year, the head teacher shall—
(a)prepare a head teacher’s report in respect of every registered pupil at the school, containing the information referred to in paragraph (4);
(b)provide a copy of each such report to the person specified in paragraph (7)(a) or (b), as the case may be, free of charge; and
(c)make arrangements to enable the recipient of the report to discuss its content with the pupil’s teacher, if he so wishes."

Thank you. That is useful to know.

Most schools do a report just containing data, a written report and a parents eve every year. The order these go in vary though because the teachers can't write them all in one go. So the Y8s and Y10s for example get a written one in the autumn, Y7 and 9 in spring and the rest in the summer.

Ifonlyoneday · 31/07/2022 23:40

Year 7 here, we got a report each term. The first 2 just had progress against target and behaviours in class. The summer term report had progress and comments, published in online portal. 1 parents evening
id be disappointed with no report.

lanthanum · 02/08/2022 10:37

Schools I've worked in have done one written report a year, but at different times of year for each year group - this spreads the load for teachers and means they can write a more detailed report. Year 9 would have theirs before options needed to be chosen, year 11 in the autumn so that there was time to act on any issues, etc.

DD's school put out a report every term and later every half-term, but only grades/tick-boxes, never any written comment, so parents' evening was the only formal opportunity to get any detail.
