My dd is due to start in September and still we have not heard anything or jad any updates on term times/day times, uniform transition dates amd plans etc

I know its still early days and we effectively have til September but there's only one term left now and I don't even know how much I need to be saving for. There's a laptop requirement too which I did know about so there are no elements of surprise in what I need as such. More any idea of any finance options available etc.

At what point would it start to get a little concerning we don't really know anything yet?

Tia

Should probably add its a brand new school.

I think a lot of schools won't send out any communications until half term (certainly that's the case in my DC's school). At the moment the focus is on prepping for students taking GCSEs and A Levels.

However, I would expect things like term dates and required uniform to be on the school website. If you post on something like a local facebook group you can probably find out more.

RedskyThisNight · 21/04/2022 13:28

Cross posted with your brand new school comment :) Is the school actually built yet? (A school near us "opened" before the building was complete, so they had to hold off advising parents until they knew exactly what they were advising them about.

Is there a school website? You may be able to find out details about the requirements for uniform and the lap top on there.

We've had a Zoom welcome meeting for parents which was a half hour overview of the school and next steps.

There's been some online forms to fill and 2 transition days have been scheduled for later this term for the new joiners to go to the new school for the day.

A year 7 Facebook group has also been set up by the school although there's nothing much on it yet.

Perhaps it's because yours is a new school that they haven't said what they are doing yet.

It’s far too early to be expecting all that through. They’ll still be hearing appeals so won’t know which students will be attending.

Whatwouldscullydo · 21/04/2022 13:35

Its being built as we speak. They were clear about the arrangements in place if it wasn't ready in time for September so I'm not to worried there.

Its just that we currently have no idea of price lists/availability of items or locker facilities etc

I think all the firms etc will ne done online but obviously there's no evidence at this point in time that the school even knows we ( by we i mean everyone )exist 🤣

Given the past couple of years there have been restrictions for fittings/shoe fittings etc and we all have holidays etc coming up to consider. There's surprisingly little time to arrange any appointments we might need in order to get everything of that makes sense.

Not yet for most of it.
I work in a school, and DS2 is starting at DS1's Secondary in September. I don't have confirmed term dates for either (I've seen a provisional for work, but it's not released yet).
We have the transition days, and a parents info evening after the second transition day. So I'm guessing most info early July.

I could get uniform info from the website tho. And probably school times. Locker info you won't get until September.

Relax. Forget about it for a month. It's nearly 5 months til school starts.

Whatwouldscullydo · 21/04/2022 13:49

I know we still have a while. Their is a website but it goes un-updated for weeks at a time and tbh the updates are usually just " holding updates" any dates of anything being revealed just keep getting pushed back.

I know it's all still a while away yet but laptops aren't cheap and whilst it would not have changed anything witg regards to order of preferences a rough idea of what kind of finance/order options they plan on making available would be handy.

We had an admissions form to fill in.
Theres a transition day on the Primary school calender for Yr6 in July.

That's it so far, wasn't expecting anything else until June really.

Whatwouldscullydo · 21/04/2022 14:02

Not even had that 🤣

Nothing past a confirmation email of acceptance on allocation day.

Wasn't expecting much. But we currently don't really know anything.

Whatwouldscullydo · 21/04/2022 14:03

Confirmation was from the LA not the school.

Are you getting a transition day ? We got a lot of info around the time that transition day was announced. This year's GCSEs and A-levels are running later because of the pandemic so this might affect when they do year 6 events.

Whatwouldscullydo · 21/04/2022 18:16

There is supposed to be one but no idea when/where /how yet

something else to we are waiting in being revealed

Brand new school still being built? Give them a chance! 😂
You’ll hear in time. Surely you know roughly how much uniform and shoes cost?

Whatwouldscullydo · 21/04/2022 18:56

To be fair they have been pushing dates back regularly since last year in the website. If they hadn't done that I'd probably not be even thinking about it.

Just seemed a little odd how they would update ro say we'd know X by Y date then it just not happen amd be wiped off then pushed back again

OP posts:
TeenPlusCat · 21/04/2022 19:10

Normally transition days etc don't happen until after GCSEs are completed, so not before end of June.
They probably don't want to be sending info out in dribs and drabs so they will be waiting until they have 'everything'.

  • first wait for waiting lists to stop moving

  • y7 transition teacher possibly visit feeding schools to meet new pupils and answer questions

  • also y7 transition teacher get info on new pupils from current schools. they won't want to be bothered with this until after y6 SATs are done

  • sort out tutor groups based on balancing boy/girl, academic ability/SEN, existing friendships/enemies

  • recruit staff for Sept in your case! and assign to tutor groups

  • THEN send parents info

Assume they will need formal black school shoes - anything else is a bonus
Assume no locker and they'll be carrying PE kit - anything else is a bonus
Assume maybe £300 for uniform excl shoes - anything less is a bonus

Whatwouldscullydo · 21/04/2022 19:34

I'm.not to worried about the uniform as such if there r no nasty surprises re excessive skirts like dd1 we should be good.

More the laptop payment options. I'd prefer to at least be able to spread those out rather than add it outright to the rest of the costs

OP posts:
Hatinafield · 21/04/2022 19:35

There are massive issues with construction supply chains at the moment. They’ll be pushing back because of delays and hoping not to have to make contingencies- undoing plans once they’re fully in place is so much harder than just holding off.
