Thanks FFF and Louis

That is so bad with the wrong papers Paddington

Fine to talk about siblings Miranda its interesting to see how they are doing too and to hear about A levels.

I am so glad for half term here though will be glad when they are all over. Have chemo again tomorrow and its good DD will be home to look after Mr Floof. We had a one off cleaner in yesterday, well 2 of them and it took 2 of them 1 hour nearly to do her room and the same length of time for DSs and then 1 hour for rest of house which was not too bad. Lovely its done. 2 new silkies now as well as Mr Floof, rabbit and the other silkie. DD wants to get a new floor fitted in her room and just been getting quotes for that. She has been to gym twice and building a bookcase from IKEA and on about painting her room again. Not sure if any revision is happening but she is happy and calm so leave her to it.

DS asd and y10 school though he is very bright were expecting him to refuse all y10 exams except maths but he actually took 8 and passed 7, so we got him an indian meal in the week and a 700g box of fudge slices today. He is really thin but DH just saw he ate all 4 slices at once, 🙄 and its half cream. Hope everyone has a good half term. Just got 1 day out planned here, a jet boat to see seals as not much energy on chemo plus looming exams.

Hello everyone, I'd like to join this thread to save my sanity please. This is my first time on this merry-go-round and I'm finding it stressful. For background DD15 has ASD and resulting memory issues and anxiety. DD has been very ill for over a week and missed 2 exams last week (RE and Trilogy Chemistry). She held down her (super healthy) McDonalds tonight so things are looking up.

Generally she suffers from a lack of motivation regarding homework/revision until the last minute, then involves me in the revision because it has to be interactive. I've usually maintained the position of being helpful but not nagging - its up to you - explained the benefits of looking ahead etc but now exams are here its a different kettle of fish (not literally DD if you are reading!).

Anyway, I'm resorting to bribery tomorrow - prom dress collection in return for 5 questions on Corbett maths. Then I'm buying cake from the cafe next door to the dressmakers as my reward.

StColumbofNavron · 29/05/2022 23:20

@shazshaz welcome, and I am in full favour of whatever gets them (and us) through, bribery or no bribery.

I think it is impossible to be on threads like this and not talk about more than the exact topic so am here for GCSEs, but more than happy to hear about other DC, pets, health, DPs, holidays and generalness of life.

Does anybody else feel like they were so relieved to get to half term, and now only a couple of days into it, are desperate to get back to exams and the feeling of ticking them off, rather than being in hiatus? I just so want them over, and not having to urge nag DD to sleep sensibly and eat sensibly and above all revise!

Yes! I'm feeling a bit impatient not, like, let's just get this done so DD can move on with her life and relax. Half-term is a pain in the bottom in the middle of it!

Rollergirl11 · 30/05/2022 09:22

DD is back to revision today. She had the weekend off which she totally needed. I think she plans to put in 3 hours each morning and then she has the afternoon/evening to do as she pleases. Then maybe do a bit more in the evening if she feels like it.

Totally fine with other things being discussed here too. That’s life after all.

@Silkierabbit hope all goes well with your chemo today.

Wish the weather was nicer for half term, it’s pretty cold and dreary here. 😨

IThinkIMadeItWorse · 30/05/2022 09:31

Our half term plans have come tumbling down as DS has tested positive for COVID. He spent most of yesterday in bed resting, he's had a bit of a temperature and sore throat, snotty nose etc but it seems to be like a heavy cold. He says he feels a little bit better today. I guess the timing could have been much worse so I am grateful for that, hoping he will recover quickly. Now just wondering if the rest of us are going to come down with it (seems likely). At least we didn't have a holiday planned or anything like that.

Hope your chemo isn't too horrible today @Silkierabbit and well done to your DS. (P.S. We had to email the maths teacher to get DS's Maclaurin result so may be worth chasing the school if you still haven't heard about your DD's score.)

Welcome to @shazshaz (and other new people), hope your DD is soon feeling 100% again. It's great to have more people here to share the ups and downs of this tricky time, I am another who has been appreciating this thread even when I don't have time to post. Getting DS something to wear to prom was one of my things on the list for this week, I guess we will have to do something more last minute (mind you he would probably be happy to go in his usual clothes!)

MirandaWest · 30/05/2022 11:37

DD has been doing a maths paper this morning and is planning to do one every morning. She has a plan of what she’s doing every day so she feels prepared for next weeks exams.

DS probably still in bed.

I am working in our converted garage with the cat for company. Usually I’d have DH on the other side of the room but he’s up in Scotland seeing his DS at the moment 😊

I’m not sure why the cat has rotated round by 90°.

DD seems to be coming out of the other side of her cold (hopefully)

I bribe too - usually in the form of spicy snack foods and sausage rolls for ds!

We have a nice dinner out booked for the evening after his last exam

Some revision happening but not loads!

Rollergirl11 · 30/05/2022 21:31

DD has only managed to do 2 sessions (of 40 mins each) today despite getting up at 9am. The plan was to get 2.5 to 3 hours done this morning before lunch as she had a friend coming over this afternoon. That obvs fell by the wayside. She’s going in to London tomorrow with another friend. Think i might have to make sure she’s done her revision before she goes.

Lightsabre · 30/05/2022 22:36

Sorry to hear about your Ds with covid @IThinkIMadeItWorse. In a strange way at least the timing isn't too bad due to half term but you have to hope he isn't washed out by it. Ds had his booster jab on Fri night and was feverish until yesterday so only really started revising again today.

Hope your chemo went ok @Silkierabbit.

aramox1 · 31/05/2022 04:15

Ds seems to have imbibed all of Stranger Things too! Finding halfterm quite a strain, no-one feels like doing fun stuff (ds far too independent! And family funeral this week too) Revision for so long is really wearing on him. Tho he didn't do any at all til last sunmer so that's a bonus!

QueenMabby · 31/05/2022 07:28

Sorry to hear about a family funeral @aramox1 - hope it goes smoothly.

@Silkierabbit -how was the chemo? Are you feeling ok?

Sending positive vibes for all poorly dcs.

Like pp we feel slightly in limbo this week. Nothing planned - not even for the bank holiday. Might try and get out for a walk (weather dependant) but otherwise it feels like too much effort at the moment!!

LouisCatorze · 31/05/2022 08:41

DD has got to get her second Covid jab this half-term. We've purposefully planned it this way in case she feels a bit under the weather (she did with the first one).

Hope the chemo went well yesterday @Silkierabbit .

Sorry to hear about poorly young people. Not surprising really as it's a bit of a 'pause' on the adrenaline high of the exams period. It always happens (think Christmas hols).

Agree that time is just dragging, and although in theory this half-term is welcome extra revision time, the reality is that it's untenable for most to be doing more than a few hours a day. Most young people really just want to get on with them and enjoy their long summers.

cheninblanc · 31/05/2022 09:53

I'm late to this but I've been reading I was on the 2020 thread until exams were cancelled and found it helpful. My daughter has had school yesterday for some subjects and she came straight home and revisied so she's cracking on. She has to work hard to get 4s and she's putting all effort in so I'm pleased. She had the weekend off, today is a performing arts open day and back to it when she gets home. I'm exhausted with it as we have my sd also doing hers and my eldest doing a levels!

CornishGem1975 · 31/05/2022 09:59

@LouisCatorze My DD had her first jab in October and 2nd in January when she was 16 but she's been hassled to get a booster now. Half of me thinks is it still necessary? But we can't get it anyway as she had covid a few weeks ago and has to wait 12 weeks now.

Feels like DD has kind of lost her way this week with revision - she did a few hours of physics yesterday but her heart is not really in it, I think without the exam imminent she loses focus.

MirandaWest · 31/05/2022 11:19

The weather here has gone cold grey and damp. Maybe it will cheer up a bit by the weekend.

DD doing another maths practice paper. She is seeing some friends this afternoon which is good (although not the nicest weather for it!)

LouisCatorze · 31/05/2022 12:38

@CornishGem1975 is your DD likely to be going on a foreign holiday this summer? That might determine whether the booster is needed or not?

DD was due to have her first jab just before Christmas (the school cocked up vaccinating all her cohort back in the autumn, and then I wanted to wait until she'd done her first set of mocks in early December), only she got COVID so had to wait until the end of March to have it. So she's running behind but has a trip to France booked so needs to get her second one done ASAP.

CornishGem1975 · 31/05/2022 12:59

She's going to Spain @LouisCatorze so that's a good point but I've just checked and it says the below, so I think she's okay?

If you are traveling to Spain for tourism you must show valid proof of one of the following:

being fully vaccinated (with both doses of a two-dose vaccine or one dose of a one-dose vaccine) at least 14 days prior to arrival in Spain (date(s) of vaccination must be specified). See ‘If you’re fully vaccinated’.

a negative COVID-19 test: either a PCR taken within 72 hours prior to departure, or an antigen test taken within 24 hours prior to departure. See ‘If you’re not fully vaccinated’.

having recovered from COVID-19 in the last 6 months. You can also use a medical certificate or recovery record to prove your COVID-19 status on entry to Spain. See ‘If you’ve had COVID-19 in the past year’.

Notcontent · 31/05/2022 13:38

Hello fellow GCSE parents. I have been lurking in this thread and found it very helpful.

My dd is very diligent and predicted good grades BUT she finds revision hard and relies on me a lot to keep her motivated and also to help with revision. So I am finding this really exhausting and stressful myself! Almost as though I was preparing for the exams on top of my job and keeping the house ticking over. It’s just me so no one else to share the load…

Stradbroke · 31/05/2022 14:39

@Notcontent I am very involved as well as my DC has ADHD and therefore I am doing all the executive functioning bits (planning, organising etc). I essentially need to body double him the whole time. I am exhausted with it, although DH does take on some subjects.
In some ways it is making us close, but when he lacks motivation like he seems to be this half term it is really hard.

I think the half term break, whilst appreciated to catch up on revision has made him less motivated as the pressure is off.

Will be so glad when all this is over and I'm really hoping his results reflect the work we have both done!

zighead · 31/05/2022 14:39

Welcome @Notcontent I'm fed up of helping with sciences but thankfully don't have to get involved in any other subjects.

My DS is doing a maths or further maths paper first thing in the morning and then doing maybe two to three hours of other stuff spread throughout the day. I've been quite impressed with him.

It's really dragging on I think and I wish they just had exams this week too. I'm just glad the weather is pretty rubbish so that it doesn't feel as if they are too hard done by.

I've decided not to bother with DS's booster. He's had the two, so is fine for our holiday to Spain in July.

Notcontent · 31/05/2022 14:52

Thank you @Stradbroke and @zighead

We think dd may have undiagnosed ADHD too. She is very willing but needs constant active learning as opposed to just sitting there reading over material. I will be celebrating when it’s all over - until A levels!!

Akite · 31/05/2022 15:47

A little bit going on today but mostly she's completely distracted by having a 16th birthday this week and planning for Glastonbury festival when exams finish. It's like walking a tightrope trying to help at the moment, if we suggest some revision might be a good idea then she perversely won't do any and will snap that it's our fault. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Lots of biting my tongue going on at the moment!

Silkierabbit · 31/05/2022 18:58

Welcome ShazShaz

Sorry your DS has covid Its Hope he recovers quickly.

Thanks for all the good wishes re chemo, 8th one done and cannula in first time, 4 more weekly ones to go so end is in sight. Will be so happy to have gcses and chemo finished, its radio after but that is easier then just hormone tablets, well possibly couple more operations but 2 main operations have been done and those ones left are optional, one cosmetic and one ovaries out. So by end of summer worst is over for me, hopefully earlier. Have been gifted a week in Cornwall mid July by cancer charity so will get a weeks break then for us all, by Lands End.

DD is mainly doing her room this week. We have floor fitter in tomorrow to fit new floor in her room and so clearing it today. Lovely to have a weeks break.

Going to see seals on jet boat on Friday, rest of time just resting and planning things. Not sure if any revision is happening this week but leaving DD to it.

Sorry about family funeral Aramax.

Welcome back Cheninblanc.

My photos are also appearing at 90 degrees Miranda, not sure if we now need to move cats by 90 degrees too. Lovely to have a cat working with you. Mr Floof is half cuddly and very loudly purring and half hyper jumping over you knocking laptop over. Its like a toddler again.
