St Pauls vs St Albans

There isn't a word limit on Mumsnet - you can explain what you want to know about these two schools :)

Although you might be better reposting with the school names in the title to give people a bit of a clue about what your post relates to.

Wendyxoxo · 28/03/2022 15:57

Hello luv, sorry, when it said title I thought I should put the title of the subject. But thank you anyways!

Do you have any ideas or information on this topic?

Which St Paul’s? If you mean the famous boys’ St Paul’s then it’s very competitive is the main thing to know! It’s also very pricey. Then what specifics do you want to know? Start by looking at the websites of both schools.

3WildOnes · 28/03/2022 17:55

These schools aren’t very close geographically so it would be unusual to be applying to both of these schools. What is it you want to know specifically. How old is your child? Where do you live? Has a tutor or prep school advises you apply to these schools?

3WildOnes · 28/03/2022 17:55

Also how bright is your child?

yes, my idea was that you should give your post a proper title so that it can be spotted by people in the know and that you explain what you are interested in. As per my first post really. I don't know anything about them, but I'm trying to help you find people who can (and to not annoy people who don't).

You've posted in "Secondary education" - people will work out that you want to discuss "Schools".

RedskyThisNight · 28/03/2022 18:58

Advanced search tells me that your DS is in Year 8 and has a scholarship at Merchant Taylors.

So I'm not sure why you are wanting to know more (as yet unspecified) information about 2 completely different schools that he's now too late to apply for /get into. Maybe just be happy with the place he's got?

Wendyxoxo · 29/03/2022 09:17

Hello, no we got an email from both schools because we’re on a waiting list. My son got into MTS with an academic scholarship. Didn’t get into habs, St Albans, St. Paul’s or harrow. We’re on a waiting list for both and are extremely keen for these schools. They seem amazing. Even Stephen Hawking said that St Albans is one of the best schools in the UK and would have delivered the same or better education over Westminster school. The facilities for both are beyond outstanding. I am just looking for a bit of help.

Sorry if I am being thick. But, if your son has got a scholarship to MTS, is your choice between sending him to MTS or waiting on a waiting list in case one of these other places decides they want him after all?

What does your son want to do?

nolanscrack · 29/03/2022 09:36

A scholarship to MTS but rejected outright by Harrow?

Jumpalicious · 29/03/2022 09:46

Ok so I’d say think about location first. Do not put your child through the hell of a 1hr 30 commute x 2 per day. Or are you able to relocate?

If so, what does your child think as pp said.

Clever boys at all schools. But he’ll have an easier time at MT since that’s easier to get into (not necessarily a bad thing!). St. Paul’s is very fast paced. London vibe. Your child might not shine at StPs or StAs the way he might at MTS. Don’t underestimate that!

Sounds like you’re most keen on st As though? I know nothing about StAs. I did used to vaguely know S Haw however. He was a university physicist not a schools expert, so maybe he said that as part of a visit or because of a connection to the school. I wouldn’t blow what he said out of proportion :-).

However, as pp said, it’s now a waiting game to see if you’re even offered the other two.

My son wants to go to St Albans very much. He is also interested in reputation. I have encouraged him to not look at schools from a reputation point of view, but he is very stuck on it. Please may any of you give me a list of schools in order from reputation and I may consider it. I don’t want him going to a place where there are stuck up kids and I don’t give a hoot about reputation. But I can explain it to him and let him decide after that. However, he mainly wants to go to St Albans.

Do you know where you are on the waiting list? This may be all moot anyway if the WL doesn't move. Concentrate on the school you do have, not the school you might never get.

Consider what? He hasn't got a place. There's nothing to consider Confused

RedskyThisNight · 29/03/2022 19:15

Your 12/13 year old currently has one place. So he goes there. That's what you need to explain to him.
If he gets a waiting list place you can make a decision on which will be the better of the 2 schools.

If you couldn't care less about reputation, why is your DC so fixated on it? Sounds like that's another thing you should explain to him.

Gazelda · 29/03/2022 19:20

Is he unhappy at MTS? If he weren't on the waiting list for StA and StP, would he be content where he is?

MrPickles73 · 30/03/2022 07:54

How do you rate 'reputation'?
