Appeal help!

I have drafted an appeal letter and wanted to gain some advice about how to strengthen my points especially linked to:

  1. harm for my ds not getting a place over impact on school for taking an additional student and
  2. the impact on oversubscribed school who takes students from out of county, instead of those within the town (within a mile of school).
Didn’t know if anyone could either check strength of my points or advise directly. Thank you in advance.

i might be bale to help a bit but I am concerned about what you are actually doing.

I work in school admissions and present appealsf or the local authority.

Are you appealing the decision not to offer you a Y7 place from September?

What do you mean about children outside the country? are you saying that you want to appeal because people who live overseas have been offered before you?

COUNTY not country!

Shellysnap · 11/03/2022 21:42

The school has an entrance exam and although my DS has scored high, the entrance mark is 14 marks higher than the pass mark and I believe it is because they offer on highest score (regardless of where candidates lives), in the past students from over 100 miles away have got a place.

Point 2 is a common selection method for Grammar Schools and is lawful. It will be part of their admission criteria so won't help your appeal, I'm afraid.

Hellocatshome · 11/03/2022 22:09

Am I understanding this correctly (we don't have grammar schools here so maybe I'm not) your DS passed the enterance exam but they set the entrance mark 14 points higher than the pass mark and therefore your DS didn't score high enough to get in? If that's right I'm not really sure you have grounds for appeal.

Overthebow · 11/03/2022 22:11

Are you saying your DS didn’t score high enough to get in? If so then not sure you’ll win an appeal.

@ShowOfHands

COUNTY not country!
phew - was about to say something about racism and school places

The Greenwich ruing means that priority cannot be given to home authority applicants - so people in other boroughs/councils must be ranked the same as those in the same authority. So if a school ranks on test score and someone in another county scored higher in the test, they cant be ranked lower than you because they live in a different county

Ok thanks all, was worth me considering it... even if it was very briefly! Will stick with my existing points and start exploring other options!

Good luck. We won a Grammar School appeal so it is possible.

prh47bridge · 11/03/2022 23:03

I will be happy to take a look and advise.

Hellocatshome · 12/03/2022 07:34

Good luck. We won a Grammar School appeal so it is possible.

It is possible as long as the appeal isn't based on them taking kids with higher scores in the exam from other counties.
