Tiffin Boys allocation and waitlist

Hi Mums, DS scored 98 (cut off 103) as per the email from Tiffin. Any chances of him getting a place ? We do not know the waitlist number as yet.

Did the email from Tiffin give any indication. When DS sat it a few years ago it told us that we could expect to get a place given his score but would probably be after Easter- it was actually a couple of weeks after offer day.

It might be worth checking 11 plus forum? They track previous years. The waiting lists for Both boys and girls do move significantly - right through to summer, so it’s very possible, but bear in mind there will be more than one boy with same score, so 5 points can equate to quite a lot of boys. Good luck.

We were told on March 2 last year that DS would definitely be offered a waiting list place - he got 102 and the email said that for the last 3 years everyone who got within 4 marks of 103 had been offered a place by September 1st. But that in some years it goes down to 5, 6 or 7 marks below. Best of luck!

LoisLane23 · 09/03/2022 10:07

We were fortnuate to get an offer on the day, but a friend who teaches at the school told me the wait list can move anything from 10-25 places right up until August, so dont lose hope. So many take the tiffin plus a private option it seems, and I imagine get both offers, if not a few more, so I guess lots of families are wading through their decisions this week. I understand that very few turn down Tiffin Girls though, which is interesting... not really sure why?

Hi,
We have 102 points as well. Living very close to the school. Hoping to be offered a place soon. 🤞

KindergartenKop · 20/02/2023 17:36

@MamaLV how did it go?

I've got my fingers crossed we won't get on the waiting list but I feel like I need to be prepared. Does the LA tell you straight away what mark your DS got? Do you then have to call the school to find out where you are on the list? Any info on the protocol would be really helpful!

woohooho · 20/02/2023 17:57

We got a letter a couple of days after offer day with DSs score saying he would definitely get a place but would probably be after Easter. He got a place a couple of weeks later in March.

Daydreamscometrue · 20/02/2023 18:00

@woohooho thanks for the information. I wonder if they advise all of those on the waiting list an idea of the chances of a place or whether it's just those likely to receive a place?

KindergartenKop · 20/02/2023 19:10

@woohooho thanks.

What would you do in this situation?
DS gets on waiting list for Tiffin on 1st March but has been offered a place in an independent school, deposit and confirmation due on 3rd March. Is the list going to move at all within 2 days?

sailingsunshine · 20/02/2023 19:19

@KindergartenKop , the Tiffin or any state WL won't move in 2 days as it's run by the council and then the school.

You should look at elevenplusexams.co.uk and in the Surrey forum section read the time line of the Tiffin boys WL last year re dates when it moved.

In the meantime you need to decide your top private school and get ready to secure the place on the 2nd March. If you eventually get a Tiffin place off a WL you lose the deposit and the autumn term fees if you withdraw after start of summer term. This is a common situation and 1 both KGS and Hampton are very familiar with , you won't be the only parent doing this.

Are you going to the hampton offers open day? When I went many years ago I felt it really focused on the difference between hampton and Tiffin/Sutton grammars.

Hopefully your ds will get a Tiffin place on 1st March and so no need to consider all the different variations.

KindergartenKop · 20/02/2023 19:25

@sailingsunshine thank you. I hate a last minute panic so this is useful.

We will try to work out our final decision before 1st March so we can act accordingly. Several front runners at the moment though, so it's tricky!

woohooho · 20/02/2023 19:32

I've just looked back at the info we got from Tiffin. We got an email the day after offer day with his score etc and telling us he would almost def get a place. It was actually about 4 weeks later he got the place. But he must have been near the top of the WL as he was only 1 mark below cut off, hence why they said he would get a place. (We didn't take it)

sailingsunshine · 20/02/2023 19:36

As @woohooho says, if you are WL but right at the top of the list you could probably take a chance or pay the deposit for peace of mind and see it as another sunk cost v 7 years of fees.

It really is such a long drawn out process with the actual exam being only 1 part!

KindergartenKop · 20/02/2023 19:42

@woohooho and @sailingsunshine thank you both! I really hope he gets an answer one way or another next week. This process is soooo long and all his close friends are 99% sure they will go to their sibling's school.

Daydreamscometrue · 20/02/2023 20:14

Is there much in the way of extra curricular clubs at Tiffin, opportunities for Saturday sports? Like @KindergartenKop we are also considering. However, DS found the Tiffin exam very difficult so I'd be surprised if we had the option.
