Yes. I wish Emanuel and many other independent schools would move away from the traditional sports further. Emanuel have at least introduced football now but it would be great to see true flexibility and the option to miss rugby completely. A lot of boys really don't enjoy or like rugby and there's nothing wrong with that. It's the least favourite sport at my DS's prep school. It's a very small number that I can count on one hand that love it.

There seems to be something old school and masculine, playing to various alpha stereotypes with regards to rugby and private schools cling to this trope with unfailing vigour.

Are they harking after a past age?

Yes.

And don't get me started on cricket in the summer.... another traditional sport.

What about tennis? Athletics? Swimming? There are other sports!

Not all schools are like that .At Trinity the main sports are rugby; hockey and cricket but you can opt for other sports instead such as badminton; tennis ; squash and football etc etc.

@Wobblypig that's good to hear. Thank you. I wonder if Whitgift is the same then as well? They usually do things in a similar way.

Does that really mean you can opt out of rugby and cricket from day one at Trinity?

DS would love to do tennis and/or badminton instead of rugby and cricket.

At trinity In games in the first and second year rugby and cricket are compulsory but you have different options in third year and above. Also the clubs are not compulsory and lots of different sports options.

No idea re Whitgift sorry .There is the option for tag rugby for those who hate or can’t do the contact game.

Emanuel has several waterpolo, swimming, cross country, table tennis, football teams

Trinity has Waterpolo plus athletics, badminton, tennis, football ...

Yes my DS goes there and he’s a keen hockey player so I think he and many of his friends would appreciate hockey as an option!
