RGS Vs John Hampden High Wycombe

I am torn between these two schools. Offer day is looming. We put RGS as our first choice but it seems unlikely we will get this and will probably be offered our second choice of John Hampden. Does anyone have any experience of both schools, which is better? I am struggling, this is such a big deal in a child's life, how do you know which is the right choice? RGS seems to do better in the league tables, is this what parents look at? Both schools are easy to get to for him... A short bus ride. Help!

RGS is the more academic, I think most people in the area would agree, but I don't know anyone who went to John Hampden and didn't like it – it might well depend on whether your DS is someone who thrives on pressure or whether he'd benefit from a slightly more relaxed approach.

Also, RGS is a massive rugby school. They are very successful at it, arguably the best state school in the country up to U15 age group, so they do focus on that sport if that is a factor for your DS.

How did you get on in the allocations OP? I was very torn between these two schools on the CAF!

Following.

My DS was oferred JHGS, so looks like that is what we will go for. He is on the waiting list for RGS but I doubt he will get an offer from them. My hubby was dead set on RGS but myself and DS have warmed to JHGS as my boy loves footy, he is not very musical either so that element at RGS did not appeal to him, he also hates Rugby. Perhaps this is the better option for him. Fingers crossed. Thank you for asking! How did you get on with allocations?

You need to decide now which you want. If you stay on the waiting list for RGS, Bucks assume that this is what you really want, and so you would lose your place at JHGS automatically if offered RGS.

My DS has been allocated RGS. He is not into sport but is musical and it is our closer school, so hoping it will turn out to be the right choice for him.

We were really impressed with JHGS at open evening so would have been happy with either ultimately I think.

Dillydally4 · 12/03/2022 11:26

Thanks I am aware of this nonamenoclue. In the slim chance we got RGS from the waiting list we would be happy with it as it is easier for DS to get to independently which would solve some issues for us. If he does not get it then there are plenty of positives at JHGS as mentioned.

You can't really go wrong, they are great schools, with a very different "flavour".

What position are you on the waiting list?
