Channing Waiting List

Hi all - our DD has been put on the waiting list at Channing.
3 questions:

  1. Did WL move much in previous years?
  2. Are all children who have not been given an offer actually on the WL?
  3. What is your guess as to how long the waiting list actually is?

My estimate is that out of the 55 places they have, they probably offered 70 - 80 meaning that they might resort to the WL for perhaps 5 kinds? So if there are 200 kids on the waiting list, the chance is really low ... But I might be totally wrong, this is just my estimate.
Would be great to hear from parents from previous years.
Thank you!

I heard that due to the situation last year (where many schools were over subscribed and had to honour more places than they intended), this year the number of offers was smaller and the waitlists longer.

No - some children are rejected out right, not everyone is on the waitlist.
We have an offer from Channing which will be turning down in the next day or so and hopefully creates some movement.
The head was very clear that if you are in the waitlist you should make it known to the school that it is your first choice and that you would accept immediately if offered.

Certainly a few years ago (2017) there was movement right up to September, and I seemed to know more girls who had got in from the waiting list than on offer day.
If it is your first choice make it clear to the school you will accept if an offer is made.
They used to make a lot more offers than they had places and then "explode" them. Hopefully they have stopped that nonsense and are more conservative in the number of offers now. This may mean a longer waiting list, but some girls will be rejected outright.
Ultimately they need to fill their places and there will be movement, so be very clear with the school about your intentions- write in and tell them it is your first choice and you will accept a place, if this is the case.

Thank you all. Yes, I have done that but am assuming many other parents have done the same (know at least 4 other parents with kids on WL and Channing being their first (often only) choice).
So still think it will be tricky … But fingers crossed!

We will be releasing our place on Monday. A friend’s daughter was on the WL and was literally offered a place yesterday (on a Saturday).
There is much hope to be had.

LolaHighgate · 13/02/2022 19:21

Wow, that’s quite something to be offered on a Saturday!! Thanks for letting me know.

They offered too many places for the standard 2 form entry this year at Channing so now they will most likely have 3 classes of 18

My daughter has been offered a place - we won’t make a decision until we have re-toured after half term. We have the luxury of choice.

  1. They over-offered last year and got burned as a result, so have been very conservative with offers this year. A friend’s child is high on the wait list and has been told she’s very likely to get a spot.
  2. No - we know children who have had outright rejections.
  3. No idea - ask Admissions.
Beachcomber74 · 13/02/2023 08:28

Can’t you ask admissions where you are on the WL?
Where are your other options?

Have only just this minute declined offers at Channing and FHRP. Hope the next family on the waitlists gets a call today. Both such lovely schools.
