Mean median mode? 11+ GL assessment

I can't find out how to find out what topics I need to cover for GL assesment 11+. Im aware the maths is beyind state level but it isnt clear what extra they need!

The latests cgp book I have doesnt have mean/mode/median for example. Can I stick with mean? Are cgp books accurate?

The exact content/format of the exam varies by region. Where are you?

I know you asked about maths, but the below link breaks down the types of verbal reasoning questions that can come up in the GL paper, along with which regions use which questions. It's not fully up to date though, as I know that the Birmingham test has switched to GL from CEM this year, and that's not on this list yet.

There's information on maths here too, and also information about each region, so you may find some useful information there.

We are GL not CEM (hence GL in the question! I do know they vary - as well as private schools doing their own thing.) I thought GL tests were standard? However we do maths/VR/English. Other areas do nvr which isn't on our list.

I will look at the VR link thankyou! We are sticking to cgp for prep for that.

The maths however goes beyond what they will have learnt at end of yr 5 (algebra/ratio) from memory but it would so help to know what the "extra" is!

Previous cgp books had mean/mode/median and this hasnt so not sure if its just missed or not in the test. I dont want to waste a week on it if don't need to! Also dont want to miss something she mighy need .

Ah that is interesting the VR types vary!!! Our school isn't on the list and I was just using past tests from GL and cgp books last time round. I didnt realise it varied.

Hmm they just say "averages" but they also say there is little focus on learning tables by rote... so are a bit out of touch! This years year 5 had the year 4 times table test and were prepped for several years for it!

I may just stick with cgp and hope there's not too much outside that!

Definitely teach her all three (plus range), after all, other than mean, it’s quite an easy concept to remember.

I think it’s extremely likely there will be a mean/average question, as in a word problem with data missing.

Eg. A team averaged 6 goals in four games. After the 5th game, the average is 20, how many goals did they score in the 5th game?

The CPG 10- minute assessment books are great.
You can also use Corbett maths for loads of worksheets by topic.

I am surprised CGP books don't have mean/median/mode because the Bond books and others do for age group 9-10.

My DC did mean in Y3, mode and median in Y4 and range in Y5. Apparently, one grammar exam did ask mode/median questions.

DaisyTheUnicorn · 24/01/2022 14:37

Google tells me it isn't in the national curriculum anymore at KS2 so maybe its intentional it was taken out!

Bond isn't specific for GL hence going down the CGP route as Bond is broader In think.

She's fine with mean - she's done that. Its the other bits threw her as she'd not done them.

And a wider question was to know which bits from yr6 they cover that we need to add!

And yes I'm expecting a mean average question! It was the others I wasn't sure of.

She is only half way through yr 5 so we need to cover the rest of yr 5 and whatever else they add from yr 6!

Google has found a similar question on elevenplusforum so it isn't just me.

I wish GL had a list of topics! I'm hoping the cgp books will be sufficient but its moments like this I wonder.

DS says he definitely had a Mode question in one of the grammar exams he wrote this year.

DaisyTheUnicorn · 24/01/2022 14:52

Was it GL Assesment exams?

I've just checked the practice book that goes with the text book and it's mean only too.

How do people work out what else they need to know that isnt taught in school/in CGP books then ?!

Yup Kent so GL Assessment. Not sure if they are changing for next year? We didn’t do any preparation for grammar except Bond as we are headed the independent route but if you are serious about grammars I would do all of CGP, Bond and Schofield. There’s no set curriculum for grammars (hence the increasing levels of preparation/tutoring).

Have you checked these out on the GL website:
11plus.gl-assessment.co.uk/free-materials/

Robert Lomax has a You Tube channel with loads of teaching videos and 11+ advice. Search his name or Easy 11 plus on YouTube.

Here you can request free 11+ resources, including loads of past papers. It’s Robert Lomax too.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks 11plus I'd forgotten they were there! We have the exam packs from GL from when last child did it somewhere too.

Scanning it doesn't look like averages in either one 😆! And looks like CGP does follow quite closely/similar questions which is good.

I wasnt using Bond as not GL based so was going to use CGP and hoping they were sufficient. We have a lot of material from them! (Their new study guide with questions/practice book/and 10min books.) Also not tons of time...

I've emailed CGP about averages...!

Also checked our school which says it is GL and based on KS2 curriculum. As mode/median isn't currently in it it should be okay. I wonder if that's where cgp have got it from.

Either way I think we will focus on what is IN the books and get that good without going beyond.

If anyone was curious (!?) I've had a fantastic reply from CGP.

GL assessments are matched to the KS2 curriculum (which matches what our grammar school says.)

CGP is matched to KS2 curriculum which is why mode/median is no longer in it (changes in curriculum.)

Brilliant. They were quick to get in touch wirh their authors to confirm too. ⭐

So although we will need to teach whatever year 6 material she wont have covered (I think algebra/ratio/etc) we can safely do that through CGP without worrying about "extra" bits. 🥳.

I have less of an idea with english if there is content not taught or just wider vocabulary/better comprehension skills needed. And vr is a dark art anyway which will just improve with practice.

Long way to go but feeling more on track 😁
