ASD specialist schools in Yorkshire

Hi. DS is Y5, and we've been told by the Autism Specialist team that they expect him to need a specialist provision for secondary; he is currently in mainstream with significant support. We're in York - can anyone share experiences of Applefields, or other specialist provision (including independent)?

DS is working at age-expected levels, and participating in whole class activities at the moment, so we'd like somewhere that will allow him to follow the National Curriculum with access to GCSEs. His strongest friendships are with girls so ideally it would be co-ed.

Danesgate

Until your last sentence I was going to suggest Breckenbrough, but it is boys only. It may still be worth a look as it is well regarded.

I've been looking at them as they seem to meet many of our requirements. I think we may need to visit and take a look. I like the Quaker ethos too.

@CarrieBlue do you have experience of Danesgate?

Definitely do look at Breckenbrough. Would you consider residential? Alderwasley Hall would be a bit too far for a day place but weekly boarding would be more than possible, and is co-ed.

Thanks. I've had a chat with Breckenborough this morning and it does feel like it could be a good fit.

I'm reluctant on residential. DS is very young for his age and very, very attached to me. Although it's a little way off, it feels impossible at this point to imagine him coping away from me.
