GCSE Art AQA Component 2 for 2022 exams

Ds is in yr 11. I've just come across this on the AQA website

"For GCSE Art and Design: Art, Craft and Design, Fine Art, Graphic Communication, Textile Design, 3D Design and Photography, students will complete Component 1 (Portfolio) only.
This means that students won’t need to start or complete Component 2".
www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/art-and-design/gcse/art-and-design-8201-8206/changes-for-2022

So, Ds won't have an externally set assignment? Ds' teacher hasn't mentioned anything about this, so I'm wondering if it's actually the case. Anyone know?

Yes, this was announced quite recently, though surprised your DS hasn't been told. Art is now portfolio only (my DD is very happy as she is rubbish at producing art to time!)

Yes that's correct, was announced along with various other changes to 2022 GCSE exams sometime last month.

Also surprised teacher hasn't mentioned it tbh.

I heard about other changes, but not about art. Seems strange because they are still going ahead with a timed mock art exam next month, I wonder if that’s just to get students to create more material for their portfolio?
It will be a good change for ds too as he also struggles with the timed element.

They might be going ahead with mock art exam in case a contingency plan is needed and TAGs return. It’s good to have the evidence in case it’s needed, plus a handy practice in case any pupils go on to do it at level 3, by which time hopefully exams will all be back to normal.

I don’t actually understand why they have done this. My dd is ok with it as she also doesn’t love timed art assessments. But surely the impact of COVID is that many students will have less material in their portfolio from year 10? Very odd.

Presumably the time they would have been spent preparing for the timed assessment will now be spent completing more portfolio work?

You are probably right - I didn’t think of that.
