Hi,
My son is in year 9 in wales and planning for IT/software at university
Is there a specific requirement in terms of subject selection now so that he can select IT/software at university?

what if he does not select IT as a subject in year 9, but can he still select IT in university?

Your best bet is to look at some university websites to get an idea of the entry requirements for the types of degree he may be interested in. I would be surprised if any of them specified IT at GCSE level, or indeed any specific GCSEs. Much more likely to specify subjects for A Levels.

I am aware that Wales is different, but for info, there hasn't been a GCSE in IT in England for several years now. I wonder if you are thinking about computing or computer science? My understanding is that maths A level is more important than CS A level, as, for one thing, not all schools offer it. Can't do any harm to take it tho if it's of interest.

I don't think any computer science degrees require it at A-level as not all schools/colleges offer it. A lot require Maths A-level and some prefer further maths too if available.

In fact I don't think computer science GCSE is usually required to do the A-level either just maths, but if he enjoys the subject so much he wants a career in the field it could be a good option if available (but in no way essential!)

His maths grade is the one that will matter to do computer science a level

DS is year 10 in Wales and starting GCSE courses. He could have chosen digital technology or computer science and has chosen the latter - he's not sure what he would like to do in the future but I suspect it may involve computer science at a level or beyond.
