Latymer school Enfield thoughts

DD1 has just been offered a waiting list place at Latymer to start in September but we're not sure whether to take it or not.

She's quite settled in to the idea of going to our local school (outstanding Ofsted, all girls). There's quite a few others from her school going there, it's a 10 minute walk and has nice grounds. We weren't expecting to get an offer at this late stage and it's thrown us. Latymer would be more like a 50 minute journey and she doesn't know anyone who's going there.

Then again Latymer is a great school with good results. I think she would go if we persuaded her and part of me thinks the challenge would be good for her. I wonder if she'd regret missing the opportunity if she didn't take it.

Any thoughts that would help us decide what to do would be welcome. Do people think it's worth the journey to go to a grammar school?

Am guessing you mean Clapton girls? We have friends with DCs at both and they all seem happy with their schools. Tricky decision as I think they are quite different but both good so will depend on what she/you want out of a school.

You could always go local now & then think about Latymer for 6th form? Does she particularly want a girls school?

Thanks @Wrinklyeyes. I've actually moved since I first started on MN & local school is Walthamstow Girls. She's not bothered about all girls or mixed - she's at the stage of finding boys annoying but presumably that will change. I think the main negative is the commute.

It's a good point about A levels, although assume it's equally competitive then!

Ooo, we also have friends with DDs at Walthamstow - also very happy. Tricky decision. The commute is a bit of a pain.

I think you’d be a bit bonkers to have her travel all that way for Latymer when she’s secured a place at a really great comprehensive with a short journey.

On the A Levels thing, I don’t think Latymer is as wildly competitive as at 11 oddly. LAE and Woodhouse make a big play for Latymer students and so there’s usually a fair chance of getting an offer for Sixth Form if

*your grades are pretty strong.

Yes, we know a few who have chosen to move from Latymer for 6th form.

I think I would choose Latymer.

Thanks all. We have decided to go for Latymer. It's a bit more of a risk but also more of an opportunity. Figure if she really hates it, she can always move to one of the local schools at a later date.
