Ds is very into science. What textbooks would you recommend that would be accessible for 12 year old in year 7? Ideally with really helpful illustrations.

No idea about textbooks but I’d imagine he could find plenty to interest him amongst the Royal Society’s annual book prize lists. (Of course he may be reading lots of narrative non-fiction already.)

Also, does he have a subscription to a science journal, such as New Scientist (or whichever is most highly regarded currently)?

The dk encyclopaedias are great, they do a science one.

The Science Book: Big Ideas Simply Explained is labelled as being for 12 years upwards - but I have the impression that most children’s science books wouldn’t be advanced enough for a keen 12 year old. I seem to remember buying a few very readable DK books on chemistry, biology, etc for slightly younger children.
