Year 7 Schoolbags

I really haven't appreciated how easy the last six years have been, Clark's for shoes and DD didn't really care what type of backpack she wore to school as long as it wasn't glittery ! Now all the girls at DDs wear handbags / Tote satchels. Can anyone point me in the right direction to a nice black leather tote bag that will carry DDs things, isn't emblazoned with logos and won't dig into her shoulder if heavy ?

Backpacks are much better for the back. Would she be ok with a bag that could also be carried as a backpack?

I would happily look at men's bags as they are likely to be more comfortable and more reasonable

Get a backpack! They have lots of heavy books, water bottle etc to carry, and a weighty bag carried over one shoulder will be bad for her back. Let her help you choose a nice one.

oh and both my DC have backpacks with a pouch for a water bottle on the outside. It is a really good arrangement and saves spillage onto books/ phone calculator etc. I don't know how many leather bags could incorporate that.

My DS has had a Berghaus backpack for the past 6 years and it still looks pretty new.

My daughter and most of the other girls in her year all have plain nike backpacks. They are really heavy and no way could use a tote bag

Well schools do things differently for a start and it may be that OP's school doesn't require so much stuff to be taken back and forth. Does your DS really need to do this?

My DC don't even take a bag to school half the time.

I'd look in TK Maxx.
I've noticed the girls around here all have some kind of designer emblem on their bags but TK Maxx should have some more demure ones as well as logo'd.
I'm guessing she won't be a fan of the River Island ones that are also very popular?

Oh the 'what bag' dilemma for y7. She should just take a bag you have at home, until she decides 'what she wants' (aka what was trendy/acceptable).

There is NO point in buying a rucksack 'as it's practical' if it's not what she wants.

Thankfully our schools have had compulsory school bags. BUT the girls get around it by carrying all their bits & bobs between classes 🙄🙄

It doesn't matter that it's not good for you to carry all the weight on one shoulder or that it's not practical, they'll do what they want to do, whatever you say.

I'd take her to TK Max if she's determined to have a 'handbag' but I'd also say if she chances her mind later I'd be happy to buy a rucksack or whatever.

My right shoulder is half an inch lower than the left because I carried a heavy bag over that shoulder from 12. Choose a backpack with adjustable padded straps that meets school guidelines.

Most have backpacks.

I recommend starting her off with whatever bag she had at primary, then buying her a new one when she's got her eye in and knows which she wants.

But if the old one is not fit to keep using, then the safest brands are Nike, Adidas and NorthFace

My daughter has had this one for a year and it’s lasted really well. The wide top opening makes it really easy to access all her stuff. She’ll continue to use it this year too.

Argos have some bags on offer atm. I got my daughter an Adidas one for £7.50 down from £15.

Her PE bag is tote style though.

I pass loads of schoolchildren on my way to work. None of the girls have tote bags. The most common bag for the boys and girls is a Nike backpack. That's what my DS has chosen for when he starts yr7 too.

There is no 'most children' unless your dc go to the same school. Every school will have it's own fashion for want of a better phrase.

It varies a lot by school. I’d go with something plain and cheap then buy one at half term. There are 3 schools near me - one the girls all have handbags by a few weeks in.

You need a back pack. They have to cart so much stuff around and it's bloody heavy. Nike ones seem to be popular at dds school.
