DS has delay in all areas, but particularly struggles with English - reading, writing etc. He’s going into the end of key stage 2 functioning at a key stage 1 level. I’m exhausted from years of pushing school (Ofsted outstanding) to support. We need a secondary school that will be nurturing and that is effective in meeting the needs of children who struggle. Dyslexia has been ruled out. DS was exposed to neglect in his early years in birth family and had delays in language development although this wasn’t an issue by the time he started school. He has very poor phonics awareness and everything has to be over learnt to have a chance of sticking. People who meet him assume he’s very bright and picks things up/remembers things but this doesn’t translate to academic work. He has sensory processing issues and is anxious but can hide it well. We chose a primary school that looked good in theory, and which does have really good outcomes for children without additional challenges and we want to properly do our research re secondary schools.
Parents of children who struggle - what’s your experience been in Nottingham/Nottinghamshire re secondary schools.
