@MrsPnut thinking of you today, hope it all goes well

Ifeelmuchlessfat · 01/12/2021 20:20

@MirandaWest is your dc really doing 18 mocks?

MrsPnut · 01/12/2021 20:50

Thanks all, operation went fine and I was home before DD got home from school.
She had RE (had a brain fart and had to waffle), English paper 2 (went very well) and Maths paper 1 (realised with 10 minutes to go that there was a question on the back page). Tomorrow is definitely Art but I think she gets to choose the order of the others. French speaking should have been today but she has deferred it because she was away for all the prep.

zighead · 01/12/2021 21:13

Glad your operation went well @MrsPnut

My DS has a revision day tomorrow and then his last two mocks on Friday which are Spanish and maths. His Spanish speaking is in January just before parents evening.

@Ifeelmuchlessfat I was thinking that about the 18 mocks, but possibly it just adds up to that if you include the different papers for each subject etc

Silkieschickens · 02/12/2021 02:35

Glad the operation went well MrsPNut and your DD is a star for doing 3 in one day.

Have parents evening tonight - there are grades for most subjects now which I presume are mock ones, all 7Bs (mid point so should in theory go to 8C by end) to 9s apart from Economics which she only started in mid June and was tested on all of last year and she got a 5 and RE which bizarrely came in at only 6A. Awaiting a French grade but she stopped that year 9 so expecting it on the low side and think would be more sensible to stop it as she is now up to equivalent of 15 which is OTT. Though she is saying she is carrying to them all. She wasn't tested on the Level 3 Further Maths but says she can do that one fine. I would prefer they test incase it goes to teacher assessment again which I expect it will as it seems like last year again. She re did physics as got a 7B and in previous school got a 9 today and she said it was very easy so hopefully that will go up. She has also moved English set to a teacher she much prefers so that is helping.

Its Hope you can get stats sorted, maybe ask if he can sit a mock in school then there will be something if goes to teacher assessment assuming there is a stats teacher.

Silkieschickens · 02/12/2021 02:35

I presumed 18 mocks was 18 mock papers rather than 18 subjects, unless my DD has a twin out there. Grin

MirandaWest · 02/12/2021 05:52

Last day of mocks coming up for DD - yes she’s got more than one exam for most of her subjects - although she is doing 11 which feels quite a lot to me.

MirandaWest · 02/12/2021 05:57

She does have three exams today - RE, Geography and History. She says she thinks her arm will want to fall off by the end!

StColumbofNavron · 02/12/2021 07:09

Just biology here today for us.

Late joined here but thank goodness there is a thread

We are not in to mocks until January which gives us a bit of time but be break over Christmas. School wrote to us last week and said they were putting on extra mocks in March so they had 2 or 3 assessment grades if Covid struck and exams didn't go ahead. They are talking about doing another one in April just before the real ones which seems crazy

6th form is chosen I think and subjects are looking like Maths, further maths, chemistry and biology which seems like a hard choice. She is out off geography as siblings did it and got bored by the end.

StColumbofNavron · 02/12/2021 07:24

Welcome @slalomsuki there do appear to be plenty of mocks and assessments. An entire year of revise, exam and repeat.

Silkieschickens · 02/12/2021 08:29

Welcome Slaloms

DDs school has just sent out a message saying we are fully prepared for a national lockdown but none is planned. Hmm Well glad one set of mocks is done.

IThinkIMadeItWorse · 02/12/2021 11:52

Glad it went well @MrsPnut and welcome @slalomsuki

We've had an email from school about testing everyone before/at the start of next term. They haven't quite finalised it yet but could well be happening on the 4th Jan (they go back on the 5th as 4th is a teacher training day). Fortunately we don't have plans to be away.

School don't offer Stats GCSE so I doubt they would be willing to run a mock for him as they wouldn't have past papers etc, just hoping they will say yes, not heard yet. He is doing additional maths but sixth form says it doesn't count towards his score because not all schools offer it.

No results yet but not surprised as they only finished last week. Well done to your DD @Silkieschickens sounds like she is doing very well but possibly taken on rather too many subjects!

Silkieschickens · 02/12/2021 16:28

Well confusingly those grades were not mock grades but anticipated grades which have been set quite a bit lower than she achieved in mocks and apparently is grades sending through to 6th form. I am trying to push for them to reflect her mock grades as she got 9s in the sciences, needs 8s predicted and they are predicting 7s for end grade. Quite worrying for teacher assessment as well. Trying to establish what on earth is going on.

StColumbofNavron · 02/12/2021 16:38

I am just trusting that the school know what they are doing, though we do have a load of confusion too. I do know though that our school will revise the predicted grades in January once the Mocks have been marked and then they revise them again after the Feb/Mar ones. We have a Parents' Evening in January so will discuss it then. One Sixth Form application is due before then though so presumably we will have to submit what he currently has. His own school guarantee a place, even if you don't make the grade - they just put you on another course or a 3 year A level programme, though I don't think this is something he will need to consider, but it does put my mind at ease for his brothers who have different strengths and will benefit from this sort of flexibility.

Not all of our mocks are the full papers either which is confusing.

Silkieschickens · 02/12/2021 17:10

DD said she has already queried them with the school but they are saying they cannot grade based on 1 mock and will not take into account her other schools grades as they don't know the quality of the teachers there. Hmm I am querying it higher up as 5 of the predicted are about 2 grades lower than she has ever achieved in exams. I am concerned if it goes to teacher assessment and for 6th form entry, she should have enough to get to 6th form she wants but FM there requires 3 x 8s in the sciences and they are predicting 2 x 7s and 1 x 8s despite her getting 9s in her mocks. RE has predicted her a 6 though she has always been on target for a 9 in exams. Economics is only predicting a 5, but that is new so can see where that is coming from. Her mock grades are amazing though so no issue with actual results. I think the issue is as she changed schools and they won't use old schools data though in teacher assessment they are allowed to. Hopefully will resolve over time but want to get sorted now.

Silkieschickens · 02/12/2021 17:13

DD has told me I am not to kill her teachers at parents evening. I was not planning on killing any of them, we need them, but am very concerned about half the subjects.

Silkieschickens · 02/12/2021 18:16

Had parents evening and was fine but was interesting the science teacher said any mocks not sat same time as everyone else cannot be counted and that is why she has been downgraded. Though now a bit concerned as not sure how many exams where sat late. I did think that might happen but DD assured me it would not. She did say they use end of unit assessments as well but as new she has not got any. She also said she thought she cheated in her science exams as they were too good. She does give the impression of not being intelligent so teachers are always Shock when they see her results and initially think they are a fluke.

Silkieschickens · 02/12/2021 19:31

We have predicted grades, all 8s and 9s so fine then actual grades achieved also fine then anticipated grades which are in about half cases coming in 2 grades lower than both of the others. It is these grades going for 6th form and will be used for teacher assessment. The issue seems to be as they have no y10 data for her, old school has it, and as a couple of mocks were sat late and they did not count them. At least I know.

Lightsabre · 02/12/2021 22:23

Glad to hear your op went well @MrsPnut. Sorry to hear about dc with Covid - it's all so hit and miss and now with the new variant who knows what will happen! Good you queried the system @Silkieschickens in case it does go to teacher assessed grades.

Ds still getting homework so not much revising of year 9/10 stuff going on. Very worried for English Lit. His brilliant history teacher has announced he's leaving at the end of term also. Really bad timing but I guess it's revision now and the head of History is taking over but not great as he won't know the children as well.

Rollergirl11 · 03/12/2021 09:23

Hi all, hope everyone is coping with mocks! DD’s started this week. She’s done English Lang, History, RE, Biology, Spanish and Geography so far. Doing first Maths paper this morning and then the rest next week.

School still haven’t told us whether the ski trip to France is cancelled or not. Despite it now being less than 2 weeks away. We are now faced with the students potentially having to self-isolate on Christmas Day while awaiting results of Day 2 test. And having to test every day whilst out there. The trip is clearly no longer viable. Just wish the school would come out and admit that though! 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

DD has also had a bit of a relapse on the ED front and has been restricting a little bit again and lost a bit of weight. Clearly the stress of mocks, the impending ski trip and some recent friendship issues have taken their toll. A very real reminder to us that the recovery process is not linear and this insidious, malignant illness is always there lurking and waiting for an opportunity to work its way back in!

zighead · 03/12/2021 15:19

Sorry to hear about your DD's relapse @Rollergirl11 Must be very worrying for you. Hope the school cancel the trip and let you know where you stand. It's probably an insurance issue. Can't see any schools organising trips in the future tbh which is going to be a massive shame.

Glad parents evening went well @Silkieschickens and you sort of know where you stand with assessed grades. I really hope the exams go ahead. I (and DS) can't cope with being on high alert continuously until June.

That is bad timing about the history teacher leaving @Lightsabre but at least they have a replacement. My DS did no English literature revision at all, so heaven knows what his result will be Hmm.

My DS has his final mock this afternoon so I bet he's looking forward to a whole weekend with no revision or homework to do. He finally finished his sixth form college applications so hopefully we will hear back from then soon.

StColumbofNavron · 03/12/2021 16:29

@Rollergirl11 sorry to hear about DD. It must be so worrying.

First week done here. He said he is happy with how they went. He is having the evening off and will get back to it at the weekend.

He’ll do his non school sixth form application over Christmas and his school have asked them not to do there’s as they will be using PSHE/form time to all complete them together. I found him watching a video of one of the subjects covered in the A level history syllabus and it’s only available at his school so if I were a betting woman I would guess he is going to stay on.

Sorry to hear about your DD @Rollergirl11 hope things start to look up soon . DS2 starts his mocks on Monday and DS1 in year 13 starts his straight after Christmas. No letting up here over the Christmas break.
