I’m trying to pretend that next year is not the end of secondary school.

DS is back in school today and out of isolation, see if he can stay in a whole 2.5 days without getting another one. Hmm

DD also in with half blonde, half brown hair which I'm told is fashionable. DH says she looks like Cruella De Vil. Quite surprised school allow it but they are laid back there which suits her. She has their 6th form open day tomorrow isolations permitting. Still getting covid cases thick and fast in from there, about 10 a day now.

Reports are in and it looks like rather than exam grades they have given a grade based on exam, continuous assessment, class work and where they are on the course. I.E. 9 currently not possible because the course isn’t finished.

Anyway, he is fulfilling what is expected with a raft of 7-8s and his tutor statement is insanely good - but it has always been this way since reception. He was actually a bit embarrassed.

Mercifully, DS2 (year 8) has done better than expected. We were both expecting a few D-E grades but actually even with a poor attitude this year he has managed mostly B-C with a couple of A in creative subjects. He was disappointed to get a B in music, but other than go to the lesson and take part plus his instruments he has not done anything over an beyond or joined any clubs etc. I’m pleased because he clearly needs to work harder, tutor statement said he appears unmotivated which is definitely true so need to work on that and getting to a decent place where he can achieve his potential.

Well done to your DS StColumbo

We just have thunder and torrential rain here now, glad the temp is cooling but DSs school have just sent a message to say they are flooded and maybe closed tomorrow after he has been back 1 day. 😭

Checking in for the new thread! We finished over a week ago and am currently in a hotel. Abroad and everything. Colder here than at home though! 🤣
💐 to all those limping through to the end of term - our last week was pretty grim with cases left right and centre - we were glad it finished, frankly.
I wonder what September will look like?

Hope you are having a lovely holiday QueenMabby

It is far too hot for me here and still covid central in DDs school. DD went to 6th form open day at current school and said it was good there, class sizes were very small and they did 1 to 1 time for subjects. DSs school has been flooded and was half closed yesterday but DS in, both DS and DD have last days tomorrow.

I have a call with science tomorrow to try and resolve for DS but very unlikely they will back down. He has got his other options apart from science at least. Got a message today to say DS had been reported for a lack of road safety as he had walked in front of a teachers car without looking. He only walks in the village on the quiet roads so not worried, he was always being reported at primary as he used to carry a teddy bear with him so people assumed he was about 5, he is tiny as well, I think but a teacher walked with him once and agreed he was safe.

How much revision/work are your dc doing during the summer? Ds is rather down about the amount that is being suggested.

Report
Silkiecats · 22/07/2021 10:43

DD has just changed schools so she has quite a bit to catch up on though its mainly subjects taught in different orders so she has done some of their y11 stuff and not their y10 stuff. She also has ukmt summer camp for maths for a week. We have a 2 week holiday but the rest of the weeks she will be studying in week and seeing friends at the weekend. Well that's the theory and what she suggested.

DS is going into y10 and will be doing absolutely nothing this year or next I expect. Hmm

Just had meeting with science and got nowhere so having to get the LA to change schools. Both in for their last half day.

And with an hour to go DD gets close contact isolation.

Last half day here, feels like it has been a long time coming!

Not sure I'm going to persuade DS to do much in the holidays, he has agreed to continue working through the science flashcards with DH so hopefully that will happen. English is our main concern and they have suggested rereading the set texts and a few other resources (seneca, BBC bitesize) so fingers crossed I can persuade him to do some of that - wish they could tell us which text they will be dropping now given the proposed adjustments. Suspect I may have to work through some of the revision guides with him. Sadly Blood Brothers (his Drama set text) has been cancelled at our local theatre so we are not going to get to see that :( He is supposed to start working on his devising portfolio for Drama so I'll remind him about that at regular intervals I guess. School have said there will be assessments in September to see how much work/revision they have done over the holidays! They have suggested "small but frequent" revision sessions, 20 mins at a time.

He does have a week at camp (was supposed to be residential but now running locally each day) and we have a family week away in the UK booked so will have some time to relax and do some fun things (assuming I can drag him away from the screen).

On a positive note heard from school that they will be offering the FSMQ Additional Maths qualification so DS will get to do that which will suit him very well.

Ds is really stressed over his devising portfolio so hopefully working on it over the summer will help. What a shame BB is cancelled, it's such a great play

DS1 has DNA as his text for drama! Not one that appears to be showing, and we are London based so have a lot of options.

We had tutor reviews today. DS1’s tutor basically said he is great again. He explained the reports because apparently they put the wrong headings on. I’m at least 2 subjects (one being an MFL) he has already achieved his year 11 grade. Little and often revision was suggested here. He has some revision cards for Spanish and Maths (maths is his weakest, in that his group move very fast) and languages are hard so I suggested 3-4 cards each a day - something like 10-15 mins throughout the day and 15 mins Memrise/duolingo. Largely though I think he will dip in and out and I don’t think we’ll see sustained revision over the summer.

Two more sets of mocks before the exams - so December and around Easter so a bit more of a sustained approach with past papers etc once back.

Ds studied DNA and had to do one of the monologues over lockdown. It's a really great play isn't it

Yes, my dS had to record it and send it in. I’m not actually familiar with it, and I go to the theatre a lot. It would have been nice for there to have been a performance we could have gone to.

In other news, even though he is isolating, he and DS2 continue to be negative on the LFT. I OTOH have TWO positive LFTs. I’m so fed up.

So sorry to hear you have covid StColumbo hope you haven't got it badly and it doesn't disrupt holiday plans.

I had cleared first two weeks anyway incase of close contact so doesn't affect us too much, the letter also just said it was recommended to isolate for DD.

Think probably everything to do with DS and schools will just get stalled over holidays which is a bit frustrating as he goes into y10 next year so we need a resolution asap. I started the process in y7, argh.

DH took DS to funfair yesterday, he found it too noisy but at least left home and got a hotdog and doughnuts and was just in the village. DH was invited to meet another family with an ASD boy today at the funfair for first time though it didn't go that well as DS refused to go as too noisy, I was asleep Blush as I had a nap and didn't wake in time so DH went by himself and their DS was also very scared by noise and it was raining. But at least we have their details and hopefully can do something more successful in future, difficult as DS will barely leave house now.

DD has just been here but seems OK. We've done a bit of house things so house is gradually getting more sorted. I just extended our holiday by a couple of days. Nice to have Olympics on though sad no audiences, I went when it was in London.
