@GhostTypeEevee

How much revision/work are your dc doing during the summer? Ds is rather down about the amount that is being suggested.

New to you guys. Glad to have found you.

Ummm... Ds isn't planning any work over summer, and I haven't seen anything recommending they do from school.

Anyone else? He did well in the end of year mocks (couple of 9s, several 7s, and 6s in the three sciences) but obviously I want him to meet his potential.

DS2 has his end of year exams in September as they were delayed because of the amount of work which had been missed. He is doing quite a few hours a day as he has 11 GCSE's to revise for.

Hi all!

DD has lots of work she has to produce for art and product design, and will also need to do some revision for geography and the sciences. She did well in her exams, but could have done better. She’s off to a festival with DH on Thurs, back Monday, but after that it will be nose to the grindstone here!

Yikes. Wondering if I need to get him working a bit then. Anyone else with mocks again in November? Are those kids working all summer?

DD’s next lot are November. Then February. Ugh.

Same here @HelloDulling - so will she be revising all summer? I'm hoping Sept is enough!

Report
HelloDulling · 27/07/2021 09:50

@MyOtherProfile She will do some over the summer. I’ve said to aim for a couple of hours a day. I feel like she needs to get everything from Year 10 really bedded in and consolidated before they learn anything new.

DS has surprised me this morning by doing a revision session on his Shakespeare play on BBC Bitesize. It's quite a while since they did it (at the beginning of year 10) so hopefully a helpful refresh. Yesterday when I tried to suggest he do some Drama I was met with a lot of resistance (even when I just suggested we watch Blood Brothers on YouTube!) so glad he has been more willing today. I think it needs to come from him rather than me pushing (which is tricky as I think he sometimes needs a push!)

We're enjoying the alarm being off anyway! Hope you are ok and not too ill @StColumbofNavron

@MyOtherProfile I don’t think DS is really planning on much before school starts in Sept, but then he will knuckle down.

@IThinkIMadeItWorse feeling much better after spending the last 48 hours alternately sweating and sleeping.

Glad you are feeling better StColumbo hope that continues.

DD said they had been set 2 hours of homework per subject over the summer, she has more than that to do as she changed schools, all subjects are the same but sometimes different boards (but pretty identical curriculum except for Add Maths which has gone from a level 3 to GCSE) but taught in different orders. So she has catch up from that but will be ahead in other areas. And next week she has UKMT Maths week. She is mainly talking about socialising so I'm not sure how much studying is going on but good she has lots of meet up planned - one with kids from new school, one with kids locally and one with kids in London for this weekend when she is out of isolation.

DS is still quieter than a mouse and hardly speaking and won't go out unless we go with him. He doesn't appear to be doing anything other than snuggling with his rabbit, feeding the silkies, ipadding and TV. We've got him out once so far for 45 mins or so, no work being done either.

I think y11 exams are Nov and Feb here. We have 2 weeks away so at least that will get DS out and active. His ehcp and schools things seem to be on hold until September now.

Four hours a day! Shock That's ridiculous!

My DS has some Spanish and chemistry assignments to do over the holidays but I can't see him doing anything else unfortunately.

Just checked with DD and she said they were told to do an hour a day but no-one including her is doing any of it but she says she has many social events arranged. She said she is reading a book on the SAS. 4 hours seems way ott.

Whaaaaaaaaat? In the summer holidays? That's insane.

I'm glad it's not just me that thought that was OTT, no wonder he felt completely down when they were told this.

4 hours a day is excessive! Ds school told them to take a proper break in preparation for Yr 11 but he's decided to catch up on writing some revision cards for the topics he was weaker on. Having said that, he only started yesterday and did one hour! English is my main worry so I'll no doubt have to help him with that. He needs to read the texts again - Inspector Calls and Macbeth plus Jeckyll and Hyde.

Can't believe the amount of work some children have been set. I hadn't even thought to ask. Just assumed there would be none. They need a rest and chance to recharge.

Have looked on the school homework app and I see there is a little bit of French to do each day which DS has ticked off as done so I'll make his day with that little discovery later. He has done Duolingo every day since the beginning of Year 10 which has made a huge difference.

I might suggest he re-reads his English texts and watches some documentaries related to Geog and Psych though.

DD is out of isolation - came out on Friday so could meet up with friends in London on Saturday and friends from new school on Sunday. She's got online ukmt maths school this week.

Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays. DS is still doing very little, just silkie chickens, snuggling with his rabbit, he did play an online game on DDs phone with one of her friends. I've just been sorting holiday and cleaning.

New to the thread. School has set some revision over the hols but trying to get more in. 2hr a day seems reasonable. Our next mocks are Nov and Feb which seems standard. Yr10 ones were not as great as I hoped. Less than her predicted grade so got work to do. So much content it's quite overwhelming!

No work set here - just a re-read of MacBeth. Will want ds to do some extra English though as it’s needed and also some consolidation work. Told him he could have July off so we’re starting today. Wish me luck!!

Hi all, new to the thread.
My ds is just doing about 20 min science app most days and some English his tutor set, as well as a couple of maths tutor sessions over the holidays. He was quite stressed at July mocks and school didn’t recommend anything so feel he needs a break. Can’t believe how much others are doing! I expect to be doing that in Easter hols (4 hours a day)! Ds has short focus so little and often best.

GhostTypeEevee · 03/08/2021 09:32

The four hours have been suggested but he's not doing it. If anything it seems like such a mountain that he gets himself into a tizz whenever he thinks about it
