DD has her last assessments this week in science. She is currently having a meltdown as she finds it so difficult. She is convinced she is going to fail.

Can anyone recommend some online videos or resources that I can sit with her and work through.

Thank you

DD found that going through past papers and mark scheme was useful. Then she found out what she knew and what needed some further work. Some days when even writing was a big ask we would sit with two computers, she has the Q and I had the A. Then we would talk through the papers that way. She revised a lot through discussion rather than always reading and mind maps.
BBC bitesize was also used. Some recommend Seneca but we didn't use it.
Hope that helps a bit.

Primrose kitten has revision videos on youtube that cover the basics for GCSE Sciences.

Ask her what exam board she is doing and Combined/Triple etc.

Go onto that exam board website and download the pack of exam questions that all pupils can have access to.

Check she can answer those questions (as highly likely will be those questions in her assessments) and job done.

Look at the oak academy website

My DD found this man useful. It’s called free science lessons and has GCSE and A level videos
alrightfella · 06/06/2021 14:25

Thank you. Will look through these suggestions with her.

@ChloeDecker they are doing the locked papers.

Even better to know that. The exam boards published the questions for pupils this year, for the locked papers 2019 and 2020. Just not the Mark schemes. But all pupils have access to these questions.

ChloeDecker · 06/06/2021 14:29

Let me know what exam board your DD is following and I’ll post the public link here for you.

alrightfella · 06/06/2021 14:34

@ChloeDecker Its Edexcel. Maybe I've misunderstood and the teachers are writing the papers. Surely you can't access them beforehand?

It’s been a condition for a while now to let the pupils know they questions from the Department for Education since the exams were cancelled, to give further support to this year’s Year 11s and 13s, so yes, they can see the questions and topic beforehand.

@ChloeDecker Thank you. She has done some of the past papers and looked through the assessment material but obviously the papers she will be sitting this week. She is currently watching the primrose kitten videos a poster linked to above.

OP posts:
alrightfella · 06/06/2021 15:14

Sorry I meant the papers she is sitting this week are locked so she won't know the topics in advance.

The locked papers are 2019 and 2020. The links I have posted include all the questions from both those papers. I do think you are misunderstanding what I’m posting!
alrightfella · 06/06/2021 15:29

@ChloeDecker In that case they are not the papers she is sitting and the school have written them themselves. She has sat one of the science papers already and none of the questions from those links appeared on there as she had gone through all that before the exam which is why she is panicking. She found it really tough.

I can't wait for all this to be over. These assessments have been as stressful as if they were taking the real exams imo. She is mentally exhausted.

OP posts:
ChloeDecker · 06/06/2021 15:35

Oh my goodness, so they haven’t even told her what topics will be in the assessments? I’ve posted the guidance previously from DforE and I would use that to request the topics that will be in the assessments at the very least. Although if she can answer every question in those links I posted, other similar questions should not be out of her reach.
If the assessment is tomorrow though, I would go through the syllabus specification bullet point by bullet point and check she knows all definitions against that, including writing them out 5 or so times (not just watch the YouTube videos)

alrightfella · 06/06/2021 15:51

@ChloeDecker This is why I think this year's assessments are so unfair. So some kids literally know the questions they'll be sitting whilst others have no idea what topics will even be on the paper.

The guidance is very clear, so it is a shame her science dept are not following it but it is only guidance and as long as they are consistent with her whole year group.
Remember that she is in the same boat as all of those her own year group and is not up against year 11s in different schools, so in that respect, does not matter what the other schools are doing.

I wish your DD lots of luck in her assessments this week and she just needs to remember her exam technique (checking key words in every question and write enough for the marks on offer) and she just has to show evidence against the JCQ grade descriptors-not have to get full marks in every question.

Second the recommendation for my free science lessons on you tube
He is very clear and thorough in his explanations
