The Wind Singer trilogy by William Nicholson and Ready Player One - both recommended by my 12 year old Hunger Games mad daughter.

Note that Ready Player One has masturbation references. Nothing weird or inappropriate but thought best to flag!!!

Holes by Louis sachar, was a favourite when my oldest was that age and has been passed down to eldest step child who is that age and also thought it was great

Earth Girl trilogy by Janet Edwards

The Gone series - Michael Grant. I think I described it as Hunger Games with the Simpsons Dome Fab series.

The eve of man series is brilliant
