In-school dyslexia/specific learning difficulty assessments vs diagnostic assessment

I have a hunch my youngest son has a specific learning difficulty. Likely the same one my eldest (now University aged) son has around working memory. I'm not convinced but highly suspicious.

I have had a word with the SENCO at school who was lovely and suggested that we'd be better off not spending our money on the diagnostic assessment but rather doing an in school test for free.

I'm thinking:
I know that my eldest son's issue wasn't originally picked up by his school (a different one) despite investigations so I feel skeptical about 'in-school' tests

The £300 isn't a huge investment for us (though not minimising the expense)
I would like a full thorough investigation to set my mind at ease and if it comes back with nothing then I'll still think it's money well spent

But I don't want to be insensitive/arrogant and over-ride the school's advice.

Any thoughts/experience to share?

If the cost is not an issue go private. It may help identify more than a diagnosis, relative strengths, weaknesses and strategies too support him.

That’s a very good point LISZ. I also think it might be more comprehensive?
