Feeling like my year 11 ds has been let down...

He has Sen so needs support both with school work and with his anxiety. He's just got his EHCP. Due to lockdown and home learning he has completely lost any motivation and was doing bare minimum at home little to my knowledge as I was making him log on. Not once did school contact me to say he wasn't doing any learning online. No feedback was given. Since rejoining school he's struggled to get back into it and his anxiety has been through the roof. His maths teacher due to his lack of effort with online learning he is nto longer on track for his pre dicted grade. I understand ds should have out more effort in I really do but it just seems so unfair.

Does anyone else feel the same about year 11's?

Was the SENCO involved before the EHCP? I would think they would be the best person to contact about this if they were. It must be so frustrating for you to find out at a stage when it's difficult to make a difference. Will they run any catch up classes outside of school time for him?

Yes we making arrangements to apply in year 10 then covid happened so its come to late. I fe they've let them done in the sense there should have been more contact with pupils making sure they had feedback and remained motivated. Since returning in April he's struggled mentally to even attend. It's like he's given up and I'm sure others have been the same.

Yes, the lockdown has covered two school years which really hasn't helped. I would start with the SENCO, it is unfortunate that the school didn't contact the parents of students that didn't turn in work or engage with the online learning. I hope his anxiety eases soon OP.

Yes the school should have informed parents of children not meeting the expectations. But I also think that the parents have to take responsibility too. Having a child log on, at whatever age, was never going to be sufficient for many children. And by the sounds of it, your child is one of those impacted.

'little to your knowledge', so... You made sure he logged on and then? Mentally checked out? Didn't discuss school work with him day by day? Expected the school to hold his hand and parent him?

Meltinthemiddle · 12/05/2021 08:04

Of course I did. It was an effort to get him to log on and I sat with him to do it when I could due to having to work. There was no communication between school and parent alot was through the child which isn't great when they need support in school with organisation and managing néw time tables. I rang school numerous times to say I was struggling to get him to work and not sure what he's supposed to be doing. Not once did subject teachers contact me to say he's not doing the work. Is everything OK? At school he used to have inclusion somewhere to go so teachers could support him and keep him on track. Unfortunately both me and dh was working so not not always easy.

He has SEN and often needs tasks broken down and extra support in school. So yes I did expect school to hold his hand and support him and encourage him. As much as we tried to help as you know sometimes it's better coming from an outside source.

In our school they rated them in engagement and any of them not engaging had to go in and work at school (social distanced on computers). I'm sorry they didn't support you more.
