Lateral flow tests are your kids doing them regularly?

My Secondary children are testing irregularly. One of them tested last Sunday, I think the other last tested last Wednesday.
I remind them on testing days and will help/supervise, but they no longer want to do them. Are your children still testing twice a week?

Yes. They don’t like doing it but it’s non negotiable.

HazeyJaneII · 05/05/2021 10:02

Mine do them twice a week, they are pretty good at remembering to do them and don't have a problem with it.

EversoDelighted · 05/05/2021 10:03

Yes, whole family are doing them twice a week.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 05/05/2021 10:06

No. We try to do them every Sunday, but the midweek one generally gets forgotten. Tbh I'm not convinced they are putting the swab as far up their nose as they should be (they insist they are, but it doesn't look like it) so they are probably not very accurate anyway.

1starwars2 · 05/05/2021 10:11

@YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake
That's part of it DS1 wasn't, in my opinion, doing it thoroughly enough anyway.
It is definitely not "non negotiable" in our house. They have to consent to it, and although we were initially very diligent this has waned. I would be interested to know what percentage of secondary children are currently regularly testing.

Yes but only because I have a reminder set on my phone if not it would be forgotten! They hate it but like a PP it's nonnegotiable. The school haven't sent any home for over 3 weeks though so I have been collecting from the local collection site....makes me wonder how many students at their school are still testing if not being sent home with the tests!

IveNameChangedAgain2020 · 05/05/2021 10:15

Yes son does it religiously twice a week. But he doesn't want to catch Covid so understandable

Heyhohi · 05/05/2021 10:15

No, they are useless

2anddone · 05/05/2021 10:15

And when I say nonnegotiable it's not because I force them too it's because my dad is in our bubble so they do it to protect him...they call it nonnegotiable themselves not me!

Seeline · 05/05/2021 10:18

Yes - twice a week and continued all through the Easter holidays as well.

School have asked for them to be done in the morning, but that's just too much of a rush, so we do them in the evenings.

DH and I aren't doing them at the moment because we just aren't going anywhere. The only place I've been for months is to get my jab!

1starwars2 · 05/05/2021 10:20

@IveNameChangedAgain2020 Him testing won't stop him catching covid though, will it?
We need everyone to do it. I will do a big push tonight to get them both to do the midweek one. They won't refuse, but they will delay, say I will do it later, and then it never happens.
It's great so many people are doing twice a week.

No. Its an awful waste of plastic.

1starwars2 · 05/05/2021 10:22

@Hotcuppatea That's true, it is a lot of plastic waste!

Because we all do it (excluding the 11yr old) it’s like a daft family event every Sunday and Wednesday to test!

Comefromaway · 05/05/2021 10:25

Dd is away at college and does her diligently.

Ds is trickier. He's autistic and finds it very distressing. We are trying to aim at once per week.

PretzelParadox · 05/05/2021 10:25

No. Because they're not very accurate, especially when cases are so low.

paralysedbyinertia · 05/05/2021 10:25

We are trying to test regularly, but I confess that we have occasionally forgotten/fallen out of sync. We do always try to get back on track though.

UserAtRandom · 05/05/2021 11:38

Our compromise is that we just do them on Sunday evenings.
Their (very large) school has only had 3 positive LFTs since they were brought in in March and 2 of these were subsequently confirmed as false positives by PCR tests. So I'm really not convinced of the value of them.

Schoolbypass · 05/05/2021 12:02

I think a lot of kids aren’t doing them because the schools aren’t enforcing it and anyone with a child doing ‘exams’ would rather ignore them as they don’t want to suffer the consequences of getting a positive and having to isolate. There’s a sense among people I know that we just need to get through this next month or so of precious face to face schooling and ‘exams’. Lots of keeping fingers crossed and a hope that really low case numbers and an increasingly partially/fully vaccinated community lessens the need for testing (and the quite high risk of a false positive)

Mine are doing their’s but averaging only once a week or twice every 10 days.

ChristopherTracy · 05/05/2021 12:41

Yes, twice a week as part of their school contract. At DS school the LF tests have already picked up three cases.

Yubaba · 05/05/2021 12:56

Yes, we all do them on a Sunday and Wednesday evening, I’m a HCP and I test because of work and the DC get them from school, I get a txt reminder to record the results.

Orangebug · 05/05/2021 12:58

They were doing them religiously until the last week or two. The last few seem to have been forgotten!

WaterBottle123 · 05/05/2021 13:02

No because those tests are so inaccurate as to be dangerous. Pointless Tory propaganda initiative that does more harm than good.

My 2 are doing them (usually) but not reporting negative tests because the reporting process is too fiddly and also because I slightly resent their data being recorded. I imagine many people are the same, so even if data is published, it probably won't be accurate. Plus, the Government are (hopefully) savvy enough to know that headlines screaming "Only x% of school children are testing regularly" would only nudge more families to stop testing. So my advice would be not to ask the question (or start more threads like this), because the answers might lead to a vicious circle.

Clymene · 05/05/2021 13:24

Twice a week here. I administer.
