Gold D of E

Just wondered if anyone's DC in the midst of Gold or silver awards have had their expedition arranged by the school over the summer.

My DC is in the midst of completing all the voluntary/skill/physical elements for her Gold but has been told by the school they won't be organising the expedition over the summer due to covid restrictions saying it's not allowed.
However I have friends DCs in other schools who have been told by the school and have planned their summer expeditions to complete the gold award...

Trying to find out what is the general consensus at most schools out there is .....

I'm pretty sure DS's school have a 'normal' silver expedition arranged for July. I don't know about Gold though, although I can't see why it would be any different.

Yes, silver D of E practice expedition is in June, real thing in July.

Our school don't seem to be forthcoming on plans for the summer. (gold) So my DD and her group found an external company that were still running and they did their practice over Easter and have booked to do their final expedition in July.
Dd has also found and booked her residential element for over the summer so most of the elements will be finished before she starts upper sixth - just s few months of skills to complete.

We just had a school DofE meeting last night and all expeditions are going ahead in June and July for Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Could your DC (and schoolmates) join in with a school that is running it?

Swimmum1206 · 22/04/2021 12:28

DS completed his Bronze expedition last weekend and is doing his Silver in July. They weren't allowed to camp overnight, so just did the hiking/map reading and cooked a meal. This will be the same for Silver.

Our school is running it but still holding a plan a (full camping trip) and plan b (day trips including cooking); waiting to see what the rules are on the day.

Still going ahead here. Gold expedition in early July, the sailing expedition (couldn’t socially distance Grin are now joining in with the walking/camping one).

My son's school said they wouldn't be arranging an expedition trip but that independent companies were offering trips which could be booked. Some students looked into booking one for the summer and encouraged others to join them to make up the numbers.

Around here most schools have shipped their Gold expeditions to external providers . So DD due to complete practice and actual expedition this summer and has a residential booked . So if Covid allows then she should get everything done by Sept - she has finished her skill, and physical and volunteering 9/12 months done. They are doing full wild camping in normal Gold terrain but I know that the DofE rules have been relaxed to allow local expeditions and I understand you even have to sleep in your tent at night . I’m pleased DD gets to experience the real thing though . So she is lucky.

Thisisconfusing · 24/04/2021 00:53

That should read you don’t have to sleep in your tent at night !

Thanks everyone - school finally realised they can do it and have arranged the gold expedition together with the practice one after another---- Yay Smile
Think they must have read this post and realised all the other schools were organising it
