Unseen Poetry

Ds has asd and really struggles with unseen poetry. He can identify the language techniques but finds trying to understand the inference really difficult (I presume this isn't helped by his ASD)

Does anyone have any tips on if there is a way he should approach this or any revision guides that may help?

DD has got the CGP revision guide for unseen poetry and has said she finds it helpful. There is some general advice and them lots of practice questions - some worked examples, practice questions (with answers in the back!) and questions with sample answers. Also have a look on YouTube for Mr Salles and Mr Bruff videos - both my DDs have always found these very useful.

Thank you. I will get the revision guides and ask ds to have a look at the YouTube videos.

My son did his unseen poetry exam (sorry test) last week. He doesn’t have ASD but really struggles with inference to the extent that he sometimes completely misunderstands the poem. I found the CGP unseen poetry book a life saver. Thankfully the poem in his exam was fairly straight forward and I think he’ll be ok.

What I said to him before the test was not to panic if he didn’t understand the poem. Look for interesting language and structural features that he can talk about.
He had the anthology exam today so he’s now completely finished poetry...I think he’s been put off poetry for life!

Thank you @Madmoomoo I think unseen poetry has out him off poems. I was reading the poems he had been given and they were so sad that they made my eyes fill up while ds was just looking at me rather bemused. He just didn't get them at all.
He has a test when they go back so hopefully the revision book helps him and he doesn't panic too much
