Silly question about what to wear for an open day

Taking DS (15) to an open day for a boarding school he's interested in soon. It's a whole day trip do he won't be going to school that day.

What do people usually wear? The only other open day we've done was at the end of a school day so most kids were coming from school and wearing their uniforms.

Was thinking of suggesting plain chino-type trousers and a casual shirt. Obviously this isn't important but I know he'll feel more relaxed if he's wearing something vaguely the same as at least some other people.

Aiming at smart-casual but I fear my idea of smart-casual is a bit weekend barrister.

@Brian9600 , he should wear what he'd feel most comfortable in. Check the school's website, they may have photos of the pupils in their boarding house wearing their own clothes.

Decent-enough jeans and a shirt. Chinos if he has them and is Ok with slightly more formal trousers . Any casual top that is perhaps not laden with slogans. I would probably avoid a hoody and anything that looks like school uniform. Decent trainers or casual shoes are fine. Just avoid extremes.

My DD (so obviously not the same but similar problem last year) wore a smart denim skirt (quite short but not too short!), nice fluffy jumper and white trainers. So quite casual but it was school holidays & would have looked odd if she’d been too smart! She looked very clean & presentable which I think was the main thing - I doubt they’d judge too much as long as he looks washed & clean! Think your idea sounds perfect.

Jeans (black or dark blue) and a plain polo shirt?

I would think maybe slightly less smart.

Do you know anyone already there? They may have noticed what people tend to wear so you could ask them.

Depends on the school but if a top echelon one chinos and shirt as you describe.
