Is it worth sending my son to private school for y13??

Financially I am lucky enough to be in a position to afford private education but it was something I never wanted for my children. I dont agree with it in principle. However, things change - covid, lacklustre homeschooling etc. My son is currently in Y12, studying a-level english lit, business and history and welsh baccalaureate and given that this year is a write off essentially, I am debating whether for his final year i put him into private school so he can get some really focussed attention.

I dont even know if a private school would take him. I know that our local one doesnt do welsh bacc (they do EPQ). Im actually going tomorrow for a visit as i am planning to send my daughter there in september, she will be going in to Y9, so i can see what the Head's thoughts are. just wondering is anyone here has any experience of this?

I would imagine the chances of you finding another school that is doing exactly the same boards for his subjects, and has studied the subjects in exactly the same order, is pretty remote. If you have money to spend, I think it would be better spent on tutors?

I think you'd be expected to put him into
Y12 so he can do 2 years at the new school.

Agree with User even if they are the same board they do not teach the topics in a specific order. I would use the money to pay for a tutor, one to one, or he starts year 12 again at the private school.

Doubt they'd take him, plus the EPQ is done pretty much in Y12.
As stated they may take him if he repeated Y12, though you've missed the deadline for entry this Autumn.

I’m guessing he wants this too? It’ll be a non-starter at this age if he’s not keen. Also given that yr13 is pretty full on, it’d be hard starting a new school even if they were doing exactly the same exam boards, same choice of English lit novels and history time periods AND had taught in exactly the same order. He’d have to get to know a new school, teachers, and students which all takes additional effort. The current school offering would have to be pretty dire or have an extremely unhappy teen for me to consider this.
