I think the usual suspects are all really good for comp sci , so all the top unis/London Unis plus also/ or especially Bath and Warwick?

It is not my field at all, mind, but I do also hear good things about Southampton.

It is getting more and more competitive so grades are going up up up.

icanbewhatiwant · 29/04/2021 17:02

I have heard read reports that the first AZ gives more side effects than the second. But the second Pfizer gives more side effects than first. But it seems the older people are the less likely they are to have side effects. I know a few in their 20's that were really poorly after the vaccine. But I'm sure it's all much better than getting covid.

icanbewhatiwant · 29/04/2021 17:04

Ds says they've all signed a petition asking to let them play football again. Apparently they are going on strike if not allowed 😂

crazycrofter · 29/04/2021 17:08

@Seeline

I had my second jab yesterday. So far so good, because last time I felt horrendous for 3 days, and took a week to fully recover (AZ). Hopefully you'll be OK.
That’s good news as I was like you after my first jab. I still have a lump on my shoulder three weeks later...
JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/04/2021 17:39

@seeline glad your second was OK, it gives me hope! I had 24 hours of vomiting, upset stomach, huge headache with painful joints and back pain and exhaustion with the first one. Next day all gone. Dh had nothing at all. I am hoping not to have that again even if it was short lived.

@icanbewhatiwant I am hoping you are right! Maybe my body identified as someone 20 years younger Grin

icanbewhatiwant · 29/04/2021 17:44

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn yes maybe it did. I had a headache all day the next day after AZ I'm a headachey person...so that was bound to happen. DH had Pfizer and had a slight headache for a couple of hours when he woke up the next day. It'll be interesting to see what he's like after the second. He had his 10 weeks ago. So hopefully will get called for the second one soon.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/04/2021 17:54

I booked mine on the NHS app but my first was through the GP. My friend told me I could do that so at least I have a firm date now. It's in four weeks tomorrow (11 weeks from first one), it allowed me to select a Friday afternoon - just in case of a bad reaction!

KingscoteStaff · 29/04/2021 18:57

DH and I are both having our 1st at 9am on Saturday. Then treating ourselves to brunch afterwards!

EventuallyDistracted · 29/04/2021 20:08

We both had our first jabs in mid March. We were told to come back to the same centre at the same time 12 weeks to the day, so we didn't have to rebook. They will be at half term, luckily we aren't going anywhere.

Zandathepanda · 29/04/2021 20:30

My Uni Dd is a volunteer at a big centre. She keeps hoping she’ll get a left over jab but the days she’s been they have been using Astra Zeneca and got too low on stocks anyway. She only gets 15mins break as it has been so busy. Great atmosphere between the staff and volunteers.

icanbewhatiwant · 29/04/2021 20:57

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn we had ours at health centre. If you book second online how do you know you'll get the correct vaccine? Don't you have to have the same again? Our health centre only did Pfizer vaccines for a few day. The rest of the time they've done AZ. Dh was one of the Pfizer lot.

Nard75 · 29/04/2021 22:06

Just catching up with all the messages. I had my first vaccine 2 weeks ago. It was the AZ was bad for 2 days with fever, bad arm and aching body but fine after that. DS1 has dropped 4th A level computer science and just doing the 3 maths, further maths and physics. With regard to uni choices he seems to be favouring doing a maths degree at Warwick. Has anyone got any knowledge on Warwick? Also DofE silver expedition coming up for him in June.

Monkey2001 · 29/04/2021 22:44

Warwick is one of the best in the country for maths. A friend's DS is doing maths there and seems to be happy.

DS has realised he has driving theory, grade 8 piano and mocks - all in June, on top of his 15 hours/week of gym time, good thing the GF will be busy rowing!

Nard75 · 30/04/2021 05:25

@Monkey2001 It is good to hear that Warwick is good for the Maths degree. DS1 also has his theory booked for the end of May so fingers crossed.

FoolsAssassin · 30/04/2021 06:05

Nards Warwick came up in a meeting we had, apparently there are 20 applicants per place as has great reputation for Maths. Message was they need to be doing practice for things like MAT, STEP and TMUA now. Am going to sit DS down over the weekend and have a talk about it all.

FoolsAssassin · 30/04/2021 06:14

Sansou I know a couple of people who have applied for Maths and Computer Science this year. They have looked at Oxford, Warwick Imperial, Birmingham, Bristol , Bath and Exeter between them, think Warwick as well for one, can’t remember outcome of that one.

Both are holding Oxford offers as firm (one got offered for comp sci only) with Birmingham and Bath as insurance. rejections from Bristol, Bath and Imperial amongst them. Think places of application are skewed by our geography so they didn’t look at places like St Andrews and Durham.

FoolsAssassin · 30/04/2021 06:18

And just for reference the offers took a long time to come through from Bath, Imperial and Bristol as in yjey havejy long ago heard. Birmingham And Exeter were pretty quick.

College said there are a fair few still waiting to hear at the moment.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 30/04/2021 07:23

@icanbewhatiwant I hadn’t thought of that, is it likely? The vaccine place is less than a mile from where I had it previously. They recognised it was a second jab and everyone I know had AZ round here so would it be any different for anyone else who had a AZ one first? Might have to do a bit of checking...

icanbewhatiwant · 30/04/2021 10:13

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn yes most seem to have had AZ round here too. So I'm sure will be ok. DH had Pfizer. If he thought he could book online and have Pfizer he would. Only 2 weeks and the 12 weeks is up. I'm sure he will get called by the health centre.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 30/04/2021 10:22

Fingers crossed he hears very soon ican.

FoolsAssassin · 30/04/2021 11:05

DH and I are in exactly the same position * I’ve heard locally that the GP contacts you at 10 weeks which is tomorrow so hoping to hear next week.

ealingwestmum · 30/04/2021 12:31

That's a busy June Monkey! If he is contemplating at all, sitting the piano in performance mode vs practical, I'd advise to stick to practical. Over 30 mins of back to back pieces at G8 (4, not 3) in one straight recording isn't as easy as it sounds. Never thought I'd hear DD say how she had under-estimated value of scales/aural and sight-reading as part of the marks scheme. Obviously not the same issue if Trinity.

Sounds like we're quite a well vaxxed up group now!

Zandathepanda · 30/04/2021 12:49

When Uni Dd was volunteering at the vaccination centre they did 2400 jabs that day!!! She had to turn a handful away because their first had been Pfizer and they were only doing AZ that day so there are a few problems. We have just had a text to remind us of our 2nd next week! Hope everyone else gets them soon.
Also hoping that this year group can be added quickly. Dd (16) had no side effects.

icanbewhatiwant · 30/04/2021 14:00

Lots if you getting to second vaccines. That's good. It's not quite 2 weeks since my first. So I'm a bit further behind. But it's great to have had the first.

Monkey2001 · 30/04/2021 14:41

@ealingwestmum piano teacher is an examiner and steered him away from the performance exam. There is an odd thing that 20% of the marks are about overall performance and are very arbitrary. He is fine with aural and knows that scales and sight reading are good for him! Has your DD done a performance grade? The really nice benefit of a performance grade as I see it is that you get to keep a good video of their performance - would love to have had that for DS1 who has barely touched his violin since he did his grade 8.

On insurance does anybody have any words of wisdom about what to do after they have passed their test? DS1 doing his in July and is away at University so I was looking into options for him being able to borrow a car later in the summer if he passes, but can't get a quote for our electric car (just a Renault Zoe) and the car they are learning on is £268 for 2 weeks after they have passed - so more than the annual insurance with both of them on as learners!

Complications with different types of vaccine is encouraging me to be lazy and just wait until GP invites me for my second dose of Pfizer.
