Yup, not made of wood any longer. And at £40-90 a pair and limited shelf life not a cheap do.

ealingwestmum · 19/04/2021 11:40

Fond memories of my mum darning my toe caps on my pointe shoes and always doing a great job. DD lasted 2 pairs (they really don’t last long!) before finally giving up to focus on swimming. The state of her toes, even after lots of strength exercises 🤢 The boys in class back then we’re not trained en pointe but they were unbelievably athletic!

Enjoy Anne, it’s great that she’s back in the studio.

EventuallyDistracted · 19/04/2021 12:01

My DD dropped dance for swimming before she got to the pointe stage too. A friend posted a video a while ago of behind the scenes at a traditional pointe shoe manufacturing workshop, it was fascinating, proper old-fashioned craftsmanship.

ealingwestmum · 19/04/2021 13:14

Is she back swimming now Eventually?

DD is, I am keeping quiet not to jinx anything as after long period of both injuries and lock down weight gain...I never thought she’d make it back in the water, but she has!

Seeline · 19/04/2021 13:32

DD dropped ballet just before they went en pointe. She still does tap and jazz -starts back tonight having done most of last year on zoom. She was really looking forward to it, but having had surgery on an ingrown toenail last week, she won't be able to join in ☹️

Comefromaway · 19/04/2021 13:40

Dd is lucky in that she got 3 weeks of in person classes when her college opened on 8th March.

AnneOfCleavage · 19/04/2021 14:33

Eek, not liking that the pointe shoes don't last long. DDs were £60 plus all the extras so well over £100 so was hoping they'd last a good while esp as her feet have stopped growing. Oh well.
Yes, it really was a wonderful moment taking her to be fitted and they took ages getting the right pair for her feet so we felt looked after. Got some lovely pics of her first releve (sp) wearing them.
Seems there were lots of ballerina DC on this thread. DD is late to the party having done it for a a bit aged 3-6.5 then started again aged 13.5 so she is the eldest in her pointe class with the next age down being 12 as also new starters but she doesn't care.

The post has just come and it looks like there may be a provisional licence come through after all as a long brown envelope addressed to DD is among the offerings. So 2 weeks to the day! Will have to wait til DD gets home to be 100% sure.

Comefromaway · 19/04/2021 14:42

As she's only just starting and probably just going to be doing 10 mins at the barre at the end of class she may get a while out of them (unless she has very bendy feet like my dd and snaps the shank on a regular basis!)

To increase their longevity make sure they aren't shoved in a dance bag after class but are aired.

EventuallyDistracted · 19/04/2021 14:56

@ealingwestmum - yes, started back last week, she was a bit nervous as she's been moved up a squad during lockdown but she has slotted in ok. They have been doing land training by zoom every weeknight to keep fitness up but its not the same.

Monkey2001 · 19/04/2021 15:19

@AnneOfCleavage I assume you were able to use a passport photo? We had to send a photo in so it took 6 weeks, but arrived on Saturday. Theory test already booked!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 19/04/2021 15:25

How long do you think they need before booking a theory test? I’ve no idea how much there is to learn!

ealingwestmum · 19/04/2021 15:41

Pointe shoe shopping is a little like HP wand searching, can take forever but, magical at the same time. And even better that she loves it Anne, my DD gets a little emotional when we discuss the ballet days but as always, something has to give if you are continuing interests to the next level.

I’d put in for the theory straight away Justhere, you don’t need hours of practical experience to sit it and there is a huge backlog for practical dates (sept onwards unless you get a canx) which can’t be booked without theory out the way.

icanbewhatiwant · 19/04/2021 15:42

After ds telling me yesterday he wasn't revising, he was watching football, plus he told me business studies was easy. He's just sent me a text to say he's failed his business exam as he couldn't answer 8 questions. 8 questions? How can he not answer 8 of them? I think the results are going towards an AS grade. Though I'm not sure if they are official AS grades or not.

icanbewhatiwant · 19/04/2021 15:44

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn ds2 didn't start on his theory stuff until a couple of days before his test. That's him though...everything at the last minute! He used the 4 in 1 app. but as I said further up the post, they claim to have all the possible questions, but ds had 2 that weren't in the app.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 19/04/2021 16:02

Thanks both, I have booked it for June, I’m thinking that’s a bit late now? There wasn’t really much before then just the odd late one 20 miles away so I’ve left those.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 19/04/2021 16:03

Oh no @icanbewhatiwant, does he know where he went wrong?

Monkey2001 · 19/04/2021 16:04

The earliest DS could book his test was beginning of June, which feels fine, allows plenty of time to get on with driving, was never going to do practical test this summer.

ealingwestmum · 19/04/2021 16:12

Perfect timing Justhere.

icanbewhatiwant · 19/04/2021 16:12

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn I'm sure June will be fine. Unless you think he'll be ready for practical soon.

I haven't spoken to ds yet. He just text to tell me he'd failed. He won't be home until around 4.30pm

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 19/04/2021 16:18

Noooo nowhere near ready for a practical! 😱.
Thanks all, I feel better about that date now.
Am I right in thinking they can’t book for the practical test till they’ve passed the theory?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 19/04/2021 16:19

Large gin before 4.30 Icant?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 19/04/2021 16:21

@icanbewhatiwant was this the app?

KingscoteStaff · 19/04/2021 16:30

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn That's the one DD used + passed!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 19/04/2021 16:44

Fab, thanks Kingscote.

estherfrewen · 19/04/2021 16:47

DS did his theory Saturday and failed by 2. He was gutted. Used 4 in 1 app but he said he had several qu6not covered by it. Had first driving lesson as well which was great
