It's lovely to hear how your non Y12 DC are doing, older and younger, keep posting Piggy, and welcome (back?) Delphi.

Birmingham is such a beautiful, top rate uni. I had many challenges growing up there (more culturally, most people were lovely) and life as a teenager in the City was as a result, hard. I think it has inadvertently put DD off from applying in the Midlands as a result.

It's lovely to hear of your DD's passion for music Orange; good luck with G8 singing this summer. DD has missed music playing with her different ensembles so much. It made me a little sad to read on other threads the constant negativity towards extra curricula activities, and as if achieving G8 level is just for PS/bragging rights. I am sure there are plenty of parents that are behind pushing DC for CV value and I do get the privileged argument, but it's also just a competency metric that is understood, demonstrating a level of learning, or longevity that's been achieved, exams or not, that the instrument's fundamentals have been mastered over a period of time. DD took up sax at 16 for fun, because she had learned the basics across 3 other instruments including voice, enabling her to progress much quicker, even on a totally different type of instrument, extending her playing beyond classical, such as out of school bands.

She believes music will help her find different friendship groups beyond her academic studies at uni if she goes. It has definitely helped her to stay sane through this last year, where some of her friends have struggled to be interested in anything beyond the phone.

Your DS's coach sounds like such an arse Piggy.

Piggywaspushed · 03/04/2021 12:00

Yes, yes he very much is!

@Fferny1

DH has just asked me what engine oil am I wearing 🧡🍊? It's Profumum Roma Neroli which is delicious but not after 5 sprays 🤷🏼.

Last night I sprayed Tam Dao after a bath & needed several sprays, so completely forgot Profumum Roma perfumes are pretty powerful.

Is this for S & B @Fferny1. Fwiw I took delivery of samples from Shay & Blue yesterday. DH spent half the afternoon moaning about a headache Hmm

@ealingwestmum I agree, I do get the argument that it's elitist because not all families are in the position to pay for lessons, ferry DC around to sports matches, buy kit etc but I do dislike the sneering on MN about DCs who do lots of extra-curriculars. I never got to do much because both parents worked full time and there wasn't much happening in our village but when I got to uni and found that new friends were joining the orchestra, sports clubs etc with great confidence and experience it came as quite a shock to me as I couldn't do any of that and lacked the confidence to try. So I have tried hard to make sure my two can do sports and whatever else they choose, they aren't forced into any of it (try forcing 15 and 17 year olds!) although I have nudged them to try for a bit longer when they have been wavering that may not always have been right with hindsight. I just want them to be fit and active and have interests outside school.

orangecinnamon · 03/04/2021 14:37

@ealingwestmum certainly looking at the societies of some of the bigger Uni's you get the impression that joining them is an excellent way to meet people. I noticed on their social media accounts that students were from a variety of courses for the organising committees. One element I really miss for Dd, through having to move to sixth form , is the camaraderie / band life she had with her school house band. One time we went to an event that she was not required for, the band leader / teacher was ridiculously excited to see her and she got dragged into the pit to see all the other musicians ..they seemed so pleased to see her there it was lovely.
I'm looking forward to her experiencing that again too.

I agree. I think music, sport and drama especially are far more than just about stuffing your CV with bits and bobs.

Fferny1 · 03/04/2021 15:14

Sorry guys about the perfume post.
The app seems to do this & often post in the wrong section.
@Orangecinnamon sympathies... DH hates perfume and I love it 😄.

Is anyones ds like mine & not started exam revision yet? Ds1 said he was starting on Thursday ( broke up last Thursday week ) after saying he had loads of work to do. Meanwhile dd1 works like a Trojan all day at the kitchen table ( vet student) and he does bugger all, apart from eating a lot.
What can I do other than get cross?
Then he tells me I'm putting him down...
🤯

Piggywaspushed · 03/04/2021 15:17

DS has had his assessments pushed back til June (presumably to protect teacher workload of CAGs) so not really time to revise yet. He has been set a bit of work but otherwise taking it easy.

EventuallyDistracted · 03/04/2021 15:36

@Fferny1 I'm in both camps, I like perfume but a lot of them do give me very bad headaches, I can only wear very light fragrances and just one quick squirt. It's very difficult if I get stuck in close to someone wearing strong perfume.

DS is not revising very effectively I don't think. Nothing I suggest goes down well, but he is happy for me to spend ages going through stuff with him 🙄.

ealingwestmum · 03/04/2021 15:50

Exams here are week before half term. Not much being done other than homework essays/reading etc as they’ll be doing revision classes in school leading up; novel I guess as they didn’t get this for GCSEs.

Dec 2019 mocks seems like such a long time ago!

Zandathepanda · 03/04/2021 16:03

Hmm Dd knows nothing about mock exams or assessments. Teachers haven’t said anything. She doesn’t spend much time in school. I hope she’s not in for a nasty surprise!

EwwSprouts · 03/04/2021 16:14

Assessments after half-term here. DS is supposed to be doing A level maths this year (further maths next) and has fitted in a couple of hours around sport. Problem is that they didn't do any end of topic tests etc in lockdown and he scored badly in the last one in the autumn term so don't know if it's a good idea or not. They normally persuade a few to drop to just A level in yr13 and he might have been in that group ordinarily. I might have to talk to school straight after Easter.

ProggyMat · 03/04/2021 16:34

End of year exams under ‘formal conditions’ week before half term for DD.
EPQ handed in after this Easter break.

Fferny1 · 03/04/2021 16:34

Ds's start on the 20th of April.
So he's got no leeway at all.

icanbewhatiwant · 03/04/2021 16:44

@EventuallyDistracted mother in law used to wear lily of the valley, I'd take her out in my car and would get a thumping headache within a few minutes of sitting beside her. I eventually asked her not to wear her perfume in the car. Didn't go down well. She's no longer with us, I still can't stand that perfume if I catch a whiff.

Ds has found out his mocks aren't so close to the Easter hols as he first thought. So now doesn't need to revise as much, some are in May. I suggested doing his driving theory instead. He didn't like that suggestion though.

Oblomov21 · 03/04/2021 17:00

I love strong perfumes. I always adore the very strongest poison types that stay for minutes after the person has left the room.

EventuallyDistracted · 03/04/2021 17:13

Those are the worst for me @Oblomov21, I Poison and the like give me such a bad headache that I feel sick. My mum used to wear a particular strong perfume in the car too @icanbewhatiwant, one sniff of that one can still make me feel ill 40 years later.

Fferny1 · 03/04/2021 17:56

Lily of the valley is a really divisive smell. I adore Diorissimo and Une Carillon Pour Ange. So strong a sample lasted me two years. I once sprayed it once before beakfast and could taste it in my boiled egg.
But sweet strong perfumes ( pink Mingers) I really dislike.

Piggywaspushed · 03/04/2021 18:31

I am also allergic to Poison and also LouLou.

A woman I work with wears really strong perfume that triggers my migraines. Fortunately I no longer share office space with her but I can smell when she is around. I am normally fairly assertive and do tell people but she scares me!

I am also deeply allergic to real lilies and daffodils.

Zandathepanda · 03/04/2021 19:41

My hated stink is Lynx Africa.

On the Year 9 boys after PE (no one showered except in Lynx Africa).

I used to open all the doors and windows of my sweaty portacabin. I taught science and after several weeks of saying I felt really ill (and one girl passing out) the boys outdid themselves - so I lit my Bunsen burner as an experiment to ‘casually’ see if we would all blow up.

The last bit was done as a joke, obviously. But they never wore quite as much collectively after that Grin.

Still makes my throat close up when I think about it.

ealingwestmum · 03/04/2021 20:15

Hehe Zanda 😂 Pretty much all aerosols make me wheeze, as do lilies too. Who’d have thought such stunning flowers could be so hazardous to humans and our furry friends!

Piggywaspushed · 04/04/2021 07:31

Does anyone have any experience wit teen acne? DS's is getting worse. He doesn't seem too bothered but it is quite bad . DS1 never had any issues and nor did I or DH so no real knowledge of what is best.

He has face wash but it doesn't seem to be achieving much.

Poor chap only just got rid of braces...

Will it all just go away at some magical point?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 04/04/2021 08:59

DS has had treatment for it Piggy, DH and I never had it but DS got it quite bad a year or two ago with boils and constant raging red spots mainly on his chin and nose but also smaller on his forehead. We eventually went to the doc and he got some antibiotic treatment (tablets and cream). He wasn’t very good at taking the tablets he’d take them til the spots cleared up and then would stop and the spots came back. Didn’t matter how much we nagged that he had to keep taking them. Lockdown actually helped, I think he wasn’t touching his face as much and his skin improved a lot. Sadly, the constant mask wearing now they are back has brought it back. If it’s very bad and causing him distress then I would speak to the gp.
