Transport

We have our secondary allocation which is fine but wondering if we would qualify for transport and if so what that might be ! School is just under 3 miles away but the only waking route is down an unlit fast rural A road with no pavements. There are no footpaths across country.. there are no public bus stops for at least a mile in either direction on above unlit A road.

The law on secondary transport requires you to be living at least 3 miles from the school, unless there is no safe walking route and this is your nearest suitable school. Contact your local authority, as it sounds as if this might apply.

It sounds as if the A road might well be part of the route for a school bus coming from outside the 3 mile radius; hopefully they can arrange for it to pick your child up.
Taxis are sometimes used, although I would think they try to avoid that if they can.

Anyway, contact the LA and ask. I don't imagine they'll contact you, because they probably hope some parents in your situation will just drive their child and not ask!

We qualified for the school bus but a family down the road from us didn’t - they appealed, IIRC councillors came out to walk the route & concluded that it was a reasonable route for kids to walk, so it was unsuccessful. Route is along single country roads, totally unlit. They ended up paying for their children to get the school bus.

Thanks. Sounds like its worth me contacting LA. Its not so much the lighting although that's not great but is a very fast road with deaths on it every year - there are no pavements and bits with steep banks into woodland on blind bends !
