Hi..I am confused between the two offers HBS or Godolphin Latymer wherein we have received a bursary. HBS is at our doorstep whereas for GL have to commute 40 minutes one way.Any inputs please if costs is not a consideration. Only which school is a better choice..

OP posts:

Depends on the child, and what you are looking for in a school.

I think the responses to your query on the 'elevenplusexams' site have been quite insightful.
But probably very few people with direct experience of both as they are so far apart.

ShagMeRiggins · 28/02/2021 11:45

I have no opinion to offer but saw thread title and thought it was a baby names thread.

Best of luck with school choice, OP.

This link might be helpful to you. Very similar but it was Tiffin vs G&L with bursary. Tiffin Girls is almost like HBS.

Free and on doorstep every time!

Kerry987 · 28/02/2021 14:46

I would go for the free school and local. Your daughter will have local friends and plenty of time to study and do other activities.

Calibrachoa · 28/02/2021 14:48

Ha ha at baby name thread. I'd probably go for Baby Godolphin

thefew · 28/02/2021 15:11

OP, they are both fantastic schools so well done to your DD. But if you live very close to HBS then G&L might be more than 40 minutes commuting? Maybe more like an hour plus, and possibly a change of tubes/buses?

On that basis I would go for HBS as your daughter will be less tired from travelling which in turn will help with her learning and concentration. This is especially a consideration when she comes to exam time. Also, the differences between the two schools in their A-level and GCSE grades are so minimal that you will probably see the schools go up and down the league tables over the coming years.

The other thing to consider is that tide is changing and the top universities - including Oxbridge - are likely to select a state school candidate over a private school candidate where everything else is equal.

Of no relevance really, but my Granny taught at Henrietta Barnett (before the Second World War) so I always notice when it’s mentioned in a thread Smile

TomorrowOnce · 28/02/2021 15:16

Funny about the baby name. Another vote for Baby Godolphin! (Too difficult to call Baby Henrietta particularly when I am upset!)

Whilst I agree on comments about having local friends, I would want my child to have friends far and wide in London. That is just my opinion and I always want to see what is on the other side of the 'norm'.

Excellent offers BTW - I had to check the other site mentioned by a PP. Both and others are fabulous schools. Good luck.

Tavannach · 28/02/2021 15:17

What does your DD think? She’s the one who’d be doing the commute.

LLPHLGL · 28/02/2021 16:29

I have a DD at G&L and it is a fantastic school. But having a very short commute to a great local school is really not to be ignored!
Are you the same poster as on the elevenplusforum? If so why did you narrow it down to those two schools from your other offers as that may help people know what your priorities are to help advise? (there was a mention on that forum about diversity for example...)

Free and local!!! HBS is one of the best schools in the country. Congratulations

LondonMummer · 01/03/2021 07:36

I have boys but grew up very near HBS and live nearby now. If I had a girl that would be my dream offer. As others have said it's one of the best schools in the country. And you live near. Total no brainer and well done. It's exceptionally competitive to get in and has outstanding outcomes.

teachocolate · 01/03/2021 08:54

HBS. It’s one of the best schools in the country. GL is also a great school but free and local are big advantages to choose a school.
Congratulations to your DD!

teachocolate · 01/03/2021 08:56

just would like to add... if your DD is interested in particular extracurricular at GL which HBS doesn’t offer, it’s worth to consider GL.
