Hi,

Looking for some feedback on both John Lyon and St Helens for DD.

Anyone care to share?

TIA

Well John Lyon it would be their first intake of girls, it can be very hard for girls to be in such a minority, although I guess it has to start somewhere!
St Helens we looked at for DD, and absolutely loved it. We just didnt sit it as too far from us, but if we were nearer we 100% would have loved it

Thanks @afewtoomanychoices. That was also my concern with John Lyon.

I always thought of JL as quite an academic school but as I’m considering it for my son I looked at the results recently. Their exam results are nowhere near St H if that bothers you. It may be easier to get into, especially if they’re widening their intake to take girls. I’ve never seen the school so can’t comment on their facilities but my DD is at St H and their facilities are amazing. I would also like to hear from parents with boys there - are you happy with it and what is the feeling about bringing girls in?

Curiouspoppa · 15/02/2021 08:06

Thanks @mammmamia, DD got into both so was curious to get feedback from anyone with children attending either.

What did you think of JL OP?

HelloDulling · 15/02/2021 08:44

I have no direct experience of either, but a friend works in a prep nearby, and she always talks about JL in terms of the school you go to if nowhere else will take you.

Curiouspoppa · 15/02/2021 09:03

Thanks @HelloDulling, interesting feedback.
@mammmamia I liked JL, for some reason it appealed to me more than St H, but maybe because I went to a similar school.
I enjoyed my conversations with the teaching staff during the open day and the facilities were pretty decent.
Didn't get to walk round St H, which was a shame.
Any feedback on the teachers at St H if your child struggles in any subject?
How competitive is the school academically?

@Curiouspoppa my daughter is in the prep school so I have no experience of support if they struggle with subjects in older years but so far they have been great, in prep at least.

Academically they are strong but not in the same league as NLCS / City / Habs etc but they are focusing more now on high potential, oxbridge etc.

Your biggest decision is probably whether you want her to be in an all girls school which can suit some girls very well and others not so much. Or at JL which is just opening up to girls.
