Coombe Girls School in New Malden/Kingston

Hi lovely mums,

My daughter is likely to be offered a place at Coombe girls school in New Malden. She was also offered a place at SHS but sending her to an independent school is going to be a financial stretch for us.

What are your opinions/insider knowledge of Coombe girls school? I heard from my neighbours that girls at the top sets do really well. My daughter is above average in her state school and she prepared for the 11 plus but there is no guarantee that she will make it to the top set in Coombe girls. Does anyone know how the girls in other sets do? Is it fairly easy to move from one set to another and are there any ways to prepare for the test which determines set allocation?

I’ve only ever heard good things about Coombe. It’s quite local to us and some girls from DD’s prep end up there if not looking at independent. They have been happy and stretched, but have been in top sets.

Still making our choices @daysem but looking at one independent versus state grammars

@corblimbea good luck with the choice you make! This year it is incredibly difficult to decide as we have not seen any of the schools. IMHO virtual open days do not really give that much insight into how a school operates and how the pupils are on a normal school day.
